- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I have been raising this for a long time. We get a vague response all the time. I am not trying to have a go but as someone who represents an area with people accessing hospital appointments regularly in Dublin because we do not have the facilities in Sligo University Hospital, we need a concrete answer on when there will be access to some kind of beverages or basic facilities on our train....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I appreciate that.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I appreciate that but when I looked at this briefing document, there was no reference to anything in the north west. We have heard all about Dublin. There is the Luas in Cork and there will be BusConnects in Galway but there is no commitment for Sligo.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Sligo is an urban route.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: No offence but there is a difference between Tipperary and Sligo. Sligo is seen as an urban centre. It functions as a city, so it comes under urban transport.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport: Urban Public and Sustainable Transport: Discussion (1 Oct 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Urban.
- Seanad: School Transport: Statements (30 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Fáiltím roimh an Aire Stáit. I will continue on from what other Senators have said. During the summer, we all got phone calls about the lack of school transport. One girl I want to mention who lives in Sligo has been taking the school bus every day since she started in junior infants. This August, her school bus application was refused because of the lack of available...
- Seanad: Pension Auto-Enrolment: Statements (30 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. I welcome the opportunity to contribute on the discussion on auto-enrolment. As we all know, the best time to start a pension is as early in one's career as possible. However, the reality for too many people, particularly low-paid workers and those at the beginning of their working lives, is that there is no spare capacity in the weekly or monthly budget...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: A motion moved yesterday in the Dáil by the Labour Party called on the Government to take immediate action to address child poverty and child homelessness. The latest ESRI report states child poverty has reached unthinkable levels in Ireland. One in five children is living below the poverty line, and this is when housing costs are factored in. These children are not statistics. We...
- Seanad: Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Motion (25 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I second the amendment.
- Seanad: Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Motion (25 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I, too, welcome the Fianna Fáil motion, and I also welcome the fact that the Government is supporting it. I will speak about the motion but also the amendments. The UN independent commission report states Israel has shown clear intent to establish permanent control over Gaza while ensuring a Jewish majority in the West Bank. I, too, was in the West Bank, 20 years ago, and at that...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Health Services (24 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I raise the ongoing issue of the absence of a community worker for MS services in counties Sligo and Leitrim. The north west has the highest instance of MS in the country, but alarmingly there is no dedicated MS community worker in Sligo or Leitrim. They are the only counties that do not have a dedicated community worker. MS Ireland put together a business proposal and submitted it to the...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Health Services (24 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: There was no indication there that there is going to be any commitment to delivering MS services in the north west. I thank the Minister of State for outlining the amazing work MS Ireland and section 39 workers provide and I know that. Could the Minister of State bring it back to the Minister, and it would be really appreciated by the people in the north west, that this has been going on...
- Seanad: Public Expenditure, Infrastructure, Public Service Reform and Digitalisation: Statements (24 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Earlier this month, the Northern and Western Regional Assembly released a report on the status of priority infrastructure projects. The Northern and Western Regional Assembly does amazing work in identifying not only the needs and gaps in provision but also the possibilities that could be implemented. There are a number of absolutely crucial transport infrastructure projects which have been...
- Seanad: Migration: Statements (23 Sep 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit agus déanaim comhghairdeas leis as ucht a post nua. Although migration has increased in recent years, it has always existed. The likelihood is that the level of people on the move in future will only grow, as has been mentioned, due to war and climate chaos. People move for a variety of reasons, including to escape war, conflict,...
- Committee on Children and Equality: General Scheme of the Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jul 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I welcome the witnesses and thank them for attending and for their briefing documents. Many of my questions have already been asked. I welcome the impact of change in the claims under unfair dismissals and equality legislation. There is a person I am currently working with for whom this came up, so this is welcome. It has been mentioned that people find accessing the WRC and their...
- Committee on Children and Equality: General Scheme of the Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jul 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I thank Mr. Holohan. Ireland has the largest disability employment gap. How is that determined? How do we compare with other countries? Does it take in access to work and does it include transport and housing? How is the gap measured? I ask Dr. Begley or Dr. Raley to answer.
- Committee on Children and Equality: General Scheme of the Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jul 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: That is great. I thank Dr. Raley.
- Committee on Children and Equality: General Scheme of the Equality (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024: Discussion (Resumed) (17 Jul 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I commend Mr. Holohan. It is not easy coming to a committee, so well done. I worked in the area of child protection within social work and it was a Tusla-funded organisation. Any new parent should be getting support, be it from a public health nurse or any support he or she needs. How does Mr. Holohan think we could change that? Mr. Holohan felt discriminated against and no doubt he was....
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (16 Jul 2025)
Nessa Cosgrove: I also want to offer my support to my colleagues on the motion on Gaza. I commend Senator McDowell on bringing it forward. I have spoken a lot here over the last couple of months about breast density. During the week, I received the following communication from a constituent, which I will read out: Dear Nessa, I am a 51-year-old woman who was recently called for my first mammogram,...
