Seanad: Planning and Development Bill 2023: Committee Stage (15 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: I am conscious I am an hour in the Chair and the poor Minister of State has not had a moment to interject as yet. However, Senator Higgins has sought a moment to clarify something. Then it will be over to the Minister of State.

Seanad: Protection of Children (Online Age Verification) Bill 2024: Second Stage (11 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: I will begin by supporting the spirit of the Bill. It has a laudable objective, that we could arrive at a position where we could prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from accessing pornography. However, I do not think the Bill is the answer. Although I note the Minister is not opposing the Bill I would understand if she was. There is no question that when it comes to pornography, full...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: I congratulate our new colleague, Senator Bradley. I could not be more thrilled to see her here. I am very proud of the Taoiseach for recognising her sheer talent and skill and elevating her to the Seanad. I also welcome the Senator's family. It is a really big day. I was emotional seeing her walking in. Her family can be very proud of her. As her colleague, I am very proud of her....

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (10 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: Over recent years, I have spoken in the House about the apartment defects issue on numerous occasions. I welcome to the Gallery Sam and Odette Doran of the Not Our Fault campaign. They represent more than 100,000 homeowners throughout the country who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves to be living in multi-unit developments where there are fire defects. The sequence of...

Seanad: Migration: Statements (10 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: First, I congratulate the Minister on his elevation to the leadership of the Green Party and I wish him well with that. We are here to make statements on migration. When I see it and read it, it gives me the chills because I have a fear of any further stoking of the hate and the activities that we have seen in our country in the last year and a half especially, which have just been...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: I thank both witnesses for their thought-provoking and frank contributions. If I could start with Deputy Chief Constable Wilson, when I read her opening statement and listened to her, the experience was that the cart was put before the horse. I heard a report from our Minister for Health recently that in Vancouver during Covid, there was a higher number of deaths related to overdoses than...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: Very good. I will come to services and resources in a moment. Was there any notable change in the patterns of organised crime around drug distribution and drug sales?

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: It sounds like Vancouver had already reached the disposition of being health led and the legal arena was brought in to support a position that was already adopted.

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: I turn to Mr. Russoniello. I apologise for my brutal pronunciation of his name. What I hear him saying is that there was an abject failure of multi-agency resourcing to support decriminalisation. What he is describing sounds pretty dramatic anyway. We currently have services such as drugs task forces, although there are not enough of them. Is there a threshold we should be looking for...

Committee on Drugs Use: Decriminalisation, Depenalisation, Diversion and Legalisation of Drugs: Discussion (Resumed) (9 Jul 2024)

Mary Seery Kearney: I thank Mr. Russoniello. It would be reasonable to say that Ireland's experience during Covid was that we had fewer numbers of people accessing supports and we saw a drop in people, so it is unfair for the experience of Covid to be used to roll back on decriminalisation. I can feel Mr. Russoniello's annoyance at that and I completely agree with him.
