- Seanad: Housing Commission Report: Motion (29 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: I thank the Minister of State for his response and thank all the contributors to the debate. It is possible to deliver homes at €300,000 or under, depending on size and location. Under Sinn Féin’s affordable housing scheme, councils and housing bodies will build homes that people can buy or at near the cost of construction, excluding the land-related costs. This can be...
- Seanad: Housing Commission Report: Motion (29 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: Just 127 have been drawn down. I must also remind the House that since 2011, Fine Gael has pumped €10 billion of public money into the pockets of private landlords. The incredible thing is that €10 billion could have been used to build permanent homes for people. Senators have mentioned-----
- Seanad: Housing Commission Report: Motion (29 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: It was suggested that we did not address the Housing Commission report. I think all three of us did in detail. However, I will conclude by addressing it again. The Housing Commission report is a damning indictment of the Government’s housing plan. The report talks about how systemic failures, ineffective decision-making, reactive policy-making and risk aversion were all impacting...

- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2022: Report and Final Stages (28 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: I welcome the chance to speak to this amendment because I missed the opportunity to oppose sections 10 and 11 on Committee Stage. As has been mentioned, the Joint Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment has gone into significant detail here. The committee discussed this with experts in the area and with the Department and produced a report which relayed its concerns about the...

- Seanad: Automatic Enrolment Retirement Savings System Bill 2024: Second Stage (28 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: I welcome the Minister to the House. Automatic enrolment has been a topic of conversation for a considerable time. Sinn Féin supports it in principle and has long advocated it. However, we are not satisfied with the structure outlined in the Bill and consequently will not be supporting it on this Stage. Should substantial changes be made during its passage, we will consider...
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2022: Committee Stage (22 May 2024)

I welcome the Minister of State to the House. This amendment, while technical, is straightforward. It does not change a lot in the grand scheme of...
- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2022: Committee Stage (22 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: I thank the Minister of State for her very genuine response. It is really important that people know, particularly if they are new to Ireland, about the support available from trade unions. Contact details for unions that can help and support them should be included as part of the work permit. I would prefer for this to be in primary legislation so I will agree to disagree with the...

- Seanad: Employment Permits Bill 2022: Committee Stage (22 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: The employers who break employment law are putting all other employers at a competitive disadvantage. We think there should be a sanction for those employers convicted of breaking the law of the State and who have treated their workers disgracefully. The Minister of State said we want to blacklist them. For two years, they should have no access to hiring vulnerable workers.

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Support for Development of Regional Film and Television Production: Discussion (Resumed) (22 May 2024)
Fintan Warfield: I thank the Chair. I thank all our witnesses for their detailed contributions. I put my first question today to the representatives of Screen Ireland when they were here last time. It relates to research in the sector. When we look back at research from the heritage, arts and audiovisual sectors, it all comes from different years. It is all very old too. The heritage sector research,...
