Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (6 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: I want to raise with the Taoiseach the serious traffic issue at present in Galway. As everybody knows, Galway city is the centre of the west of Ireland but the way it is currently progressing, it is running into trouble with traffic. We have the outer ring road which has been on the books for at least 15 to 20 years. About €30 million has been spent on it and we have nothing to show...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (6 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: The problem is that in the east of the county, many of our young people and workers go to work in Galway city every morning and come out in the evening. They probably spend about an hour and half in traffic every day of the week trying to get in and out of work. There is no guarantee they will arrive on time. This is coupled with the fact we have been talking about putting in place a bus...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (6 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: I appreciate what the Taoiseach has given me there. It is a history lesson, let us say. What I think can and should be done is to first look at the work the Minister, Deputy Ryan, has carried out in the all-island rail review. The western rail corridor can be reopened without having to go through all the processes on which we spend millions. It does not need a rail order or planning...

Carer's Allowance: Motion [Private Members] (6 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: I welcome the opportunity to speak on this important subject. It is not the first time we have spoken on it in the Regional Group of Independent TDs, of which I am a member with Deputy Verona Murphy. We have been advocating for a non-means-tested carer's allowance support grant for a long time. As a member of the disability matters committee, I have heard first-hand through listening to...

[45417/24]

Written Answers — Department of Education and Skills: Schools Building Projects (6 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: 70. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills if she will provide an update on the status of the planned permanent extension to a school (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [45418/24]

Finance Bill 2024: Committee and Remaining Stages (5 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: First, I want to speak to the issue of the universal social charge. As many TDs have said, this was a temporary measure that was brought in at a time there was a call on people who were working to try to save this country. We have gone on too long taking this money and need to put a stop to this unworkable charge on people's earnings. It does not bear any resemblance to fairness any more....

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Nov 2024)

Seán Canney: I want to raise the power up grant for small business which was part of budget 2025 for the retail and hospitality sector. Some €170 million was made available with €4,000 per business. I and other members of the Regional Group are finding that certain businesses are unable to avail of this grant for the simple reason that they did not qualify for the increased cost of...

[44329/24]

Seán Canney: 613. To ask the Minister for Housing, Planning, and Local Government the way An Bord Pleanála notifies prescribed bodies of planning applications; if files are sent by soft copy or hard copy; the way the notification is recorded; if the process of notifying prescribed bodies has changed in the past; if so, the reason the change was made; if the HSA was a prescribed body for strategic...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Ireland's Medium-Term Fiscal and Structural Plan: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (23 Oct 2024)

Seán Canney: I thank our guests for coming in today. From a lay person's point of view, we are talking about economies, budgets and five-year plans but a five-year plan is not worth the paper it is written on in the context of what happened in Ukraine or of Covid, for example. Basically, such plans are for an ideal world, if everything was right. When we have a spike in inflation, all kinds of...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Ireland's Medium-Term Fiscal and Structural Plan: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (23 Oct 2024)

Seán Canney: If one considers the surplus taxes that we have coming in now and the fact that some of that is being stored away in the so-called rainy day fund, is that the type of action that a good government should be taking so that we have reserves when we need them? An example of an area about which people are very frustrated is that of house building. Private housing is not being built. That...

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Ireland's Medium-Term Fiscal and Structural Plan: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (23 Oct 2024)

Seán Canney: What is Mr. Coffey's take on people promising that we are going to build 60,000 houses? How does he see that being done when we cannot even build 30,000 at the moment? That is not a political question. I am asking how the council sees this being done. Will something else have to be sacrificed, for example, retrofitting or something like that? Does Mr. Coffey have any comments on that?

Committee on Budgetary Oversight: Ireland's Medium-Term Fiscal and Structural Plan: Irish Fiscal Advisory Council (23 Oct 2024)

Seán Canney: The way Mr. Coffey describes some of the difficulties in getting foreign workers or getting our own people who have gone abroad to come back is like a chicken-and-egg situation. We have to provide the houses for them to live in to give them the permanency they need. They would want a guarantee that they would get a house here if they came back.
