Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2015: Vote 26 - Department of Education and Skills (30 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: It is for the Minister of State and the Minister.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2015: Vote 26 - Department of Education and Skills (30 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: I wish to make two points. Members have referred to schools in their areas in terms of the building programme. A small, four-teacher school in Dundalk that I visited last week has had an application in for the past 22 years. The teachers share a tiny cubicle of a toilet with a kitchen counter just outside it. I plead with the Minister and Minister of State to consider this school...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2015: Vote 26 - Department of Education and Skills (30 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: I wish to ask about a relevant matter, namely, special education. Students who have special educational needs and are approaching the age of 18 years will leave school next June. The situation has improved for the majority, in that the stipulation is that they should know where they are going by the end of June, but in order to prepare them, they need access to science and other subjects....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection: Estimates for Public Services 2015: Vote 26 - Department of Education and Skills (30 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: Yes.

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy McHugh, to the House. I welcome the opportunity to debate the Government position on the current political situation in Northern Ireland. The Minister of State is very familiar with affairs in the North, having previously been Chair of the Good Friday Agreement committee, of which I am a very vocal and strong member. I am delighted to see him here in...

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: I am being factual. The Senator has had his opportunity.

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: I, too, regret today’s announcement by Senator Jimmy Harte of his resignation from the Seanad. He was a great colleague, another man who worked hard, North and South, and was an avid soccer supporter.

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: He noted it in his phone book.

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: Tell that to the mother.

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: Senator Cullinane shouted-----

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: Then what happened to Maria Cahill?

Seanad: Northern Ireland Issues: Motion (23 Sep 2015)

Mary Moran: Does the Senator believe that his leader knew nothing about it?

Seanad: Children (Amendment) Bill 2015 [Seanad Bill amended by the Dáil]: Report and Final Stages (21 Jul 2015)

Mary Moran: I thank the Minister and his officials for their hard work, which I appreciate. I thank Members in both Houses who contributed on this Bill. As my colleagues have stated, it is a positive step forward. Senator van Turnhout pointed out that there are and always will be challenges. We can work together once we are aware that there are challenges. The considerable difference between younger...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jul 2015)

Mary Moran: I second Senator Mullins's call to the Leader for a meaningful debate on disability issues early in the autumn. I agree with him and I fully support the restoration of the rates for disability payments and the respite care grant. From 25 July to 2 August, 6,500 athletes, 2,000 coaches, 30,000 volunteers, representing 165 countries, will gather in Los Angeles for the largest sport and...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)

Mary Moran: I would like to raise the issue of school transport for students with a disability. I received word through a parliamentary question yesterday evening that a child with a disability who requires considerable attention was refused free school transport because he is not attending the nearest school deemed by the Department to be resourced to meet his educational needs. He is therefore not...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)

Mary Moran: I understand the topic is more suited to a Commencement debate but as the update on the matter only came through yesterday evening, the deadline had passed. I have spoken to Bus Éireann and there does not appear to be an issue on its end about transporting the child. It is now a matter for the Department to apply common sense to the issue. I have had similar issues.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)

Mary Moran: As I said, I have raised similar issues for other people. As we are coming to the end of the school year, parents need to know at this stage of the year how their children will get to school in September, particularly children with special needs. They need to know what is available. Any child attending a normal primary or secondary school will know.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jul 2015)

Mary Moran: We need to set this system in place for children. It is a question of common sense and the Department having a look at it.
