Seanad: Sport Ireland Bill 2014: Second Stage (22 Apr 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I thank the Senator.

Seanad: Sport Ireland Bill 2014: Second Stage (22 Apr 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I did not mention it. I was letting the Minister of State away with it just for today.

Seanad: Order of Business (15 Apr 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: Thank you, a Chathaoirligh. I wish to pay tribute to two great Dubs. One is the Irish soccer legend Ray Treacy who sadly passed away over the weekend after a short illness. He was a great legend in Irish soccer and was capped 42 times. He played with Shamrock Rovers and with Home Farm in Dublin. We have also had the sad and sudden passing this afternoon of Dave Billings who won an...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Apr 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I welcome the comments from the Minister for Health, Deputy Leo Varadkar, yesterday, who suggested that schools spend more time on exercise and sport as part of a review for the well-being programmes in education. The launch of the life skills survey for primary and secondary schools took place yesterday. The Minister said: "I want to see more schools spending more time on physical activity...

Seanad: An Bille um an gCeathrú Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Comhionannas Pósta) 2015: An Dara Céim - Thirty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution (Marriage Equality) Bill 2015: Second Stage (25 Mar 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I welcome the Minister to the House and thank her for bringing forward this Bill. I was somewhat overwhelmed by the response I received from family, friends, people throughout Ireland and people from far afield when I told my personal story as the parent of a gay son on a recent radio interview to the media and at a presentation I made down the country recently. Many said, "Fair play to...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Mar 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: Senator Cullinane referred to the tens of thousands of people who marched down O'Connell Street to protest over one thing or another on Saturday afternoon last, but 750,000 people tuned in to RTE to watch the Irish rugby team win the Six Nations Championship. Millions of people throughout the world tuned in to watch a series of games that took place on Saturday afternoon.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Mar 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I congratulate the team, the staff and in particular my dear friend, Joe Schmidt, for the tenacity and sportsmanship they displayed in winning the Six Nations Championship. The day was filled with drama and excitement. It was nail-biting stuff all the way to the end and there was a real cliffhanger ending. Then, on Sunday, the ladies followed the men. It was a wonderful display by the...

Seanad: Order of Business (10 Mar 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I support Senator Craughwell's call for a debate on bullying, particularly that which occurs in the workplace. A friend of mine had some serious issues as a result of bullying but, fortunately, as a result of the support and assistance he received and through the efforts of his family, he did not go down the road of committing suicide. I wish to offer my condolences to the people of France...

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Mar 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I endorse the sentiments of Senator Barrett who referred to the 80th birthday of the great Ronnie Delany this Friday. When I was a child, Ronnie inspired me to pursue his records and go to the Olympic Games and try to win gold as he did in 1956. Unfortunately, I finished fourth. I read the Bible the night before and the Lord said “Come forth” so I came fourth instead of...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I also offer my congratulations to the Irish cricket team on its wonderful success today. It is one of only a few sports in Ireland that enjoys funding from both sides of the Border. Senator Darragh O'Brien said it had received no capital funding from the Government in the past few years. This year alone it received €487,760. The Senator will find that information on the website of...

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: It is core funding for high performance sports. Cricket Ireland also enjoys the benefits of the Irish Institute of Sport. I was on the board of the Irish Sports Council before I came into the Seanad and cricket was one of the sports targeted for high performance funding. Since 2008, when the cricket team beat Pakistan, the Irish Sports Council has strategically supported cricket and the...

Seanad: Health Services: Motion (25 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I welcome the Minister to the House. I have to admit I was somewhat perturbed by the opening remarks of Senator Thomas Byrne. It was an unnecessary attack on the Minister, demanding answers and solutions while accusing him of having no health policy. He said it is the Minister's job to keep people well. Senator Thomas Byrne is not here now but I do not believe it is the Minister's job to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: As someone who has travelled across the Atlantic with Aer Lingus six times a year for the past 40 years, I understand the fear factor and the sentimental and emotional ties. However, in the big picture I see plenty of room for accelerated growth and global trade and employment. I would like to clarify why IAG identified Ireland as a natural hub. Would it bring other airlines in the group...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: Thank you.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: How would American immigration and customs clearance at Dublin and Shannon airports be affected by the increase in numbers Mr. Kavanagh expects?

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: It was an outside job.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: Discussion (Resumed) (3 Feb 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I am somewhat confused. As Senator Barrett indicated, in a recent poll, 58% of respondents said they were against the takeover and 21% said they were in favour of it. I do not know whether I am for or against it. The people who are against it say the implications are enormous. Job losses have been mentioned as well as the potential to lose the slots. The connectivity between Dublin and...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Jan 2015)

Eamonn Coghlan: I will raise an issue which might have been more appropriate for me to raise several minutes ago when there were two dozen primary school children and their teachers in the Gallery. Yesterday, Mr. Sean Cottrell, the chief executive officer of the Irish Primary Principals Network, IPPN, called for a mandatory two hours of physical education in primary schools per week. In his words,...

Seanad: Water Services Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 Dec 2014)

Eamonn Coghlan: The Minister is very welcome to the House and I congratulate him for his openness, clarity and compassion as he has dealt with this minefield he has inherited. I think people are sick and tired of hearing about water. I was just outside a little while ago and it was teeming down. Did the Minister ever drive his car home when the rain is coming down, the wipers going back and forth, and did...

Seanad: Water Services Bill 2014: Second Stage (Resumed) (18 Dec 2014)

Eamonn Coghlan: Then I began to think we could have a pipeline going up to Saudi Arabia, actually two pipelines: one with water going up there and one with oil coming back down here. We could do an exchange and do really well out of it. In all seriousness, water is a very valuable resource and it belongs to the people of Ireland. It should always remain in the ownership of the people.
