Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy. (13 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: It is an honour to have this opportunity to pay a brief tribute to Nuala Fennell. I welcome to the Gallery her husband Brian, her son Garrett, her daughter Jackie - unfortunately, her other daughter Amanda cannot be with us today - her grandchildren Katie, Ian and Eveline, her daughter-in-law Dara and her sister Bernie. I got to know Nuala really through her son Garrett and, indeed, her...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: I agree with the remarks made by Senator Maurice Cummins with regard to the bank guarantee scheme and its renewal, which is due in September while the House is in recess. I am particularly concerned with regard to Anglo Irish Bank and how the scheme may be refined or varied. What are the Government's intentions and what message has come from the Commission and the European Central Bank on...

Seanad: Order of Business. (13 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: Tá, ceart go leor. The people of Dingle and west Kerry and throughout the county and perhaps in other parts of the country are awaiting this news. I ask the Leader to give us something definitive on when it will be published.

Seanad: Civil Partnership and Certain Rights and Obligations of Cohabitants Bill 2009: Second Stage (Resumed) (7 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: The Minister without interruption.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (7 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: Is this relevant to the amendments?

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: Yesterday's announcement on NAMA is disappointing and disturbing. It clearly shows that the business plan produced last year was a complete fantasy. We now know that 25% rather than 40% of the transferred loans are producing income. Basically, the banks supplied inaccurate information. Some of the people responsible for this remain at the top in the boards and senior management of the...

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: I ask the Leader about the conflicts of interest that might arise and what the Minister and his Department are doing about them. We are now being told there will be 2,000 job losses among the staff of the banks. I do not think a single person working in a bank branch should lose his or her job unless those at the top who are responsible for the appalling mess are rooted out.

Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: The Leader should read section 35(2C) of that Bill.

Seanad: Central Bank Reform Bill 2010: Committee and Remaining Stages (6 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: And so say all of us.

Seanad: Central Bank Reform Bill 2010: Second Stage (6 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister and thank him for his detailed overview of the Bill. Nobody doubts his bona fides or his intent. He has done many good things, all of which we welcome, beginning with the appointment of Professor Honohan as Governor of the Central Bank and Mr. Elderfield as Financial Regulator and the provision of the preliminary reports on the banking crisis by the Governor and Mr....

Seanad: Central Bank Reform Bill 2010: Second Stage (6 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: This could be a lawyers' argument.

Paul Coghlan: Your time is up, Senator.

Paul Coghlan: Your time is up, Senator.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: It is bad management.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)

Paul Coghlan: I am concerned by the issues raised by my colleagues, Senators Cummins and O'Toole. With regard to the Central Bank Reform Bill, would it not be better to use the time more judiciously, with a gap between Second and Remaining Stages? A sos would allow Members to table amendments for Committee Stage. It seems the Leader is seeking to kaleidoscope the whole issue from 7.30 p.m. without a...
