Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: -----it does say that we support the directive.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: We support the directive.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: It is not a stark as the Deputy has put it. That is not what we are talking about. Deputy Darren O'Rourke raised the issue of the Energy Charter Treaty. Again, we will keep that under review but he should be in no doubt as to our mission, which is to end our dependency on fossil fuels and to develop alternatives through wind energy, solar and other mechanisms. That is clear in our...

Employment Permits Bill 2022: Financial Resolution (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I move: That provision be made in the Act giving effect to this Resolution for the charging in accordance with the Act of certain fees, being fees for the granting or renewal of employment permits, for the purpose of permitting persons who require such permits to be in employment in the State.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Taoiseach's Meetings and Engagements (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 to 6, inclusive, together. I participated in the world leaders summit at the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties, COP27, in Sharm el-Sheikh on 7 and 8 November. On 8 November, I delivered Ireland's national statement to the plenary session, taking the opportunity to set out Ireland's climate ambition and the Government's...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: All reviews are kept under constant – sorry, all campaigns are kept under constant review.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: On the live animals being back on St. Stephen’s Green, we will pay acute attention to the methodologies of that campaign. In a more serious vein, I think many good campaigns are on the way concerning climate change. We all in this House should be ambassadors for measures to deal with climate change. That is why I am glad Leinster House does not have as much manicured lawns as it...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: Deputy Ó Murchú raised the issues of disinformation and hate. He identified shocking examples and the Minister has published hate legislation designed to go after people who do horrendous acts like that. There is no toleration of that. On Deputy Mairéad Farrell's issue, I was not quite sure of the legislative response. She referred to fraud on a Revolut account and asked...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: There will be. The Deputy gave the impression there was no news about anything but there is.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I assure the Deputy there has been. I know she met the families. All the Deputies have been involved and the Minister of State went down and met with them. Deputy Costello raised apartment defects in general. The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage was here earlier and answered a question from Deputy Boyd Barrett on it. He says he wants to bring to Government by the...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: It is very serious. We cannot second-guess clinical advice on these matters. We all need to be collectively careful.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I knew there were six. The Leas-Cheann Comhairle said six..

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I wanted to end in paradise. The issue related to business schemes and SMEs in small towns. We are very conscious of that. We did not bring people through Covid with a view to having people in trouble. The temporary business energy support scheme, TBESS, to help businesses with energy costs will be introduced before the end of the year. We need to see how that lands and what the...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I thank Deputy for raising this issue. I will certainly pursue it and will ask the Minister to do so. It would be very regrettable if an organisation that receives substantial funding from the State would renege on a WRC agreement, which seems to have materialised here, and it is an agreement reached some years back in respect of redundancy. I will certainly follow that up.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: We will be as broadly supportive but, as ever, we endeavour to try to shape directives as well. Every country is involved in negotiations and in the shaping of any directive that comes forward. Sometimes that gets misinterpreted but I will follow up on this matter for the Deputy and will bring further clarity on it for him.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: I thank the Deputy for raising the issue and it is a very important one. Very serious issues arise from the use of the e-scooters and the safety of all concerned.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: This is the case everywhere, and wherever they are used, issues arise. I am simply saying that the Bill is in the Seanad, where amendments have been tabled which will then go to the Parliamentary Counsel. It looks like the Bill will then come back to the Dáil, given that amendments are being tabled in the Seanad. We will all try to work collectively to see if we can get this through...

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: Can the Deputy tell me-----

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: Is it that they will not pay him the VAT?

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (29 Nov 2022)

Micheál Martin: First, I commend to Deputy's commitment to electric vehicles. I thank him for raising the issue. I will talk to the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Deputy Ryan, in terms of the working out of this. What the Deputy said makes sense. I will follow through on it.
