National Cervical Screening Programme: Statements (1 May 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: I restate that there was a heavy emphasis on spin, no matter what way one looks at it, in terms of the answer being given to the Minister if anyone were to ask a hard question. It is not credible that the Department knew of this but the Minister did not. This is a very serious case which involves a young woman with two small children who is gravely ill. It was known that it was going to...

National Cervical Screening Programme: Statements (1 May 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: That underlines that it was considered to be important. I appreciate that the Minister is busy, but the note was not read until the following day. I still find it odd that officials in the Department knew for ten days but did not feel obliged to bring the matter to the Minister's attention. It makes me wonder about how many other cases there are of this nature that the State Claims Agency...

National Cervical Screening Programme: Statements (1 May 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: At the outset, I commend the bravery of Ms Vicky Phelan. Without her determination and fight, this scandal probably would never have come to light and those affected and their families may never have known the truth. Truth, compassion, and honesty should be evident at all levels of our health service, and even more so at the higher institutional levels of our screening programmes, our...

Order of Business (1 May 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: While it might be welcome that the Minister is to be given more time, what we are seeking is information, not lists, explanations and definitions.

Order of Business (1 May 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: Ten minutes might be sufficient if he sticks exactly to the topic. If the intention is to provide a lot of context, that will not be very helpful.

Public Private Partnership on Capital Infrastructure: Statements (26 Apr 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: I had not intended to speak on this, but when considering the issue of PPPs I was reminded of a man I represented when I worked as a full-time union organiser. The school he was a caretaker of was moving to a new premises which was being built under a PPP. The staff providing non-classroom based services - I would call them the support staff, but the company that was taking over called them...

Nurses' and Midwives' Pay and Recruitment: Motion [Private Members] (25 Apr 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: I will respond to some of the points made by the Minister of State, specifically his comments on the level of assaults on nursing staff. Every Deputy who contributed in the past two hours noted how valuable nursing and midwives are in the health system. It is a little insulting to these professionals to attribute an increase in the number of assaults on improvements in the recording system....

Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion
(25 Apr 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: I thank the witnesses for attending and for their evidence. I have a few questions. Most of them are for the HSE. There seems to be some discrepancy in the figures we are hearing. Mr McGrane talked about 29 cases as having been diagnosed. We also heard there were 43 diagnosed and potentially 400. This gets to the heart of my point, which is that there really does not seem to be much by...

Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion
(25 Apr 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: Would Dr. Spooner like to comment on the issue regarding the woman in Cork yesterday? It would appear that the regulations are not having the desired impact. Practically speaking, how will this translate into action? I am sure that like me, other Deputies have been contacted by women of childbearing age who have been prescribed this medication but have not been alerted to this issue.

Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion
(25 Apr 2018)

Louise O'Reilly: Ms O'Donnell gave evidence suggesting that approximately 400 children may be affected by foetal anticonvulsant syndrome in Ireland but that only 43 have diagnoses. Does Dr. Murphy agree with that figure?
