Seanad: Development of Rugby: Motion. (29 Jan 2003)

Terry Leyden: I wish to share my time with Senator Minihan. I support the motion. I commend the Fine Gael group in the Seanad for putting down the motion and the Leader and my group for putting down a motion in parallel which agrees fully with their sentiments. I was shocked, to say the least, that the IRFU proposes to exclude Connacht. I do not believe it will become a reality. It is totally unacceptable...

Seanad: Development of Rugby: Motion. (29 Jan 2003)

Terry Leyden: There is massive investment in the west. It is important that we retain our professional team. It does give great leadership to young people and something to which to aspire. One should bear in mind that there are 3,075 school rugby players in Connacht – that is a phenomenal number of young players – and there are 43 rugby playing schools in Connacht. Many years ago there were very few...

Seanad: Order of Business. (17 Dec 2002)

Terry Leyden: I wish to raise the case of the Nigerian woman, Amina Lawal, who has been condemned to death by stoning for alleged adultery. I unreservedly condemn the proposed use of the death penalty in this particular case. I ask the Leader to bring our views to the attention of the Nigerian Ambassador to Ireland. We should seek a presidential pardon for this woman who has been harshly treated. I commend...

Terry Leyden: I thank the Cathaoirleach for allowing me to raise this particular issue.

Seanad: Order of Business. (11 Dec 2002)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Leader to consider having a debate in the new year on the serious crisis in the Middle East. A general election will be held in Israel in...

Seanad: Order of Business. (28 Nov 2002)

Terry Leyden: I would like a debate next week on the spatial plan. It is with deep concern that we in the Roscommon, Longford and Leitrim region find that the area does not contain any hub town or town targeted for major development. I want to see exactly what implications this will have for rural towns. Does it mean that the IDA and Enterprise Ireland will be directed now not to bring industry to those...

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Terry Leyden: I support Senator Finucane's call in relation to the current dispute in An Post. Will the Leader of the House arrange for the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy Dermot Ahern, to come before the House next week to explain this ongoing dispute which is causing untold damage to the postal service? The most damaging aspect is the division between the postmen and...

Seanad: Order of Business. (21 Nov 2002)

Terry Leyden: I am aware that Mr. Philip Flynn will be arbitrating in this dispute. However, I call on the Minister to outline to the House next week what the situation is and to try to resolve it before it escalates into a strike affecting the Christmas mail, which would be a disaster. (Interruptions.)

Tourism is an extraordinary business which has major implications for this...

Seanad: Tourism Industry: Statements (Resumed). (13 Nov 2002)

Terry Leyden: Or any other day. They want cheap access and a quality tourism product, especially in the off-season. There is a tremendous genealogy industry in the United States. For example, the Lenihan, O'Donoghue and Cummins clans could launch a major tour of Ireland. It is remarkable the numbers who travel here under that heading. Iarnród Éireann and Bus Éireann are involved in such campaigns. I...
