Seanad: Business of Seanad (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: We will be voting on all the amendments, which is a guillotine. I thank the Leader for the clarification.

Seanad: Business of Seanad (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: No.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: They expect a child when it comes.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I support Senators Mac Conghail and O'Donnell on amendment No. 6.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I regard that as rather a pity. Perhaps I will have a word on the section.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I refer to a definition of "unborn", which is a rather ungainly and unpleasant word. I do not know what it means. Anything could be unborn. For example, the attempts to attribute grotesquely sophisticated capacities to a fertilised egg are unseemly - I have listened to them. That is the very beginning of life and it is not that I disrespect it. However, to describe such entities as...

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: She has not withdrawn it. In that case, I will wait and see what happens. If it is withdrawn, presumably it can be put back. I believe it is a good idea and I support it for the reasons I gave.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: That is a very good point.

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I understand what the Minister means when he says he cannot be prescriptive because it would lead to a huge accretion of unnecessary detail in the legislation. The Minister is a doctor with good experience in the medical field. Can he comment on the very interesting observations made by Senator O'Donnell? I have no difficulty, being strongly pro-choice, but it seems to me that if the...

Seanad: Protection of Life During Pregnancy Bill 2013: Committee Stage (Resumed) (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I do not support amendment No. 4 because it would reverse the entire intention of the Bill. It is unrealistic because there are clearly circumstances where it is important and proper to end the life of a foetus in preference to the loss of life of the mother. That might not be in line with the Constitution but, as I have already said, that was a mistaken amendment. Everybody now knows it...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I support the calls for moral pressure to be applied to the various orders of nuns. I understand that some orders have investment portfolios in hedge funds and elsewhere of hundreds of millions of euro. It seems to me to be grossly unchristian not to make this available to people who have been mistreated and to lump the burden on taxpayers who are already very heavily overburdened. I share...

David Norris: There was not enough time to inform the people about this Bill.

Seanad: An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a Chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Tuarascáil - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Report Stage (17 Jul 2013)

David Norris: It does matter. It does not matter what way Senators vote in this House.

David Norris: Some of them of the same Minister.

David Norris: Will the Minister of State make that remark more loudly?

Seanad: An Bille um an Dara Leasú is Tríocha ar an mBunreacht (Deireadh a Chur le Seanad Éireann) 2013: An Tuarascáil - Thirty-second Amendment of the Constitution (Abolition of Seanad Éireann) Bill 2013: Report Stage (17 Jul 2013)

David Norris: I think the Minister of State should withdraw that remark.

David Norris: No, I am sorry. The Minister of State says we are talking to ourselves and there is no reason to be here. Could the Cathaoirleach reprimand him on our behalf and ask him to withdraw the remark? It is outrageous.
