- Ban on Rent Increases Bill 2021: Second Stage [Private Members] (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: When the Tánaiste accused Sinn Féin of promising free housing, he exposed the Fianna Fáil-Fine Gael ideology-driven agenda that lit the embers of the housing crisis and fanned the sparks, leading to the catastrophe we witness in every community in this State. This catastrophe means that most young people cannot even dream of ever owning their own home. I grew up in a council...

Matt Carthy: I do not. Deputy Munster may wish to come in.
- Public Accounts Committee: Business of Committee (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: Go raibh maith agat, a Chathaoirligh. I have an agriculture committee meeting so I must leave this meeting slightly before 10 a.m. I wish to take this item of correspondence alongside No. 663 from the Revenue Commissioners, which is important and relevant in that Revenue clearly states: "It is Revenue's position that it is wholly a matter for the person or body who entered into a tax...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of Peat Shortages on the Horticulture Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: A Chathaoirligh, I know you have to be diplomatic to a point, but I have to agree with other speakers that it is scandalous that representatives of the Department are not here. I know you have cited the short notice, but any Minister who hears of an industry coming before an Oireachtas committee to report that 17,000 jobs are at risk will make sure that either he or she or senior officials...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of Peat Shortages on the Horticulture Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: I know, I appreciate that, but the very fact the Department is not here means it does not understand the subject, it does not appreciate the catastrophic situation we potentially face or it does not care. People have been talking about relevant Ministers. It is time the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine takes a hands-on approach to this issue because this is an agricultural...

Matt Carthy: I will get them from the transcript. Thank you. What about the emergency legislation?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: I thank our guests for taking the time to be with us this evening. I have a number of questions, most of which will only require short answers so I will ask them individually. Perhaps Mr. Dowling would outline what he considers to be the main achievements of the beef task force since its establishment.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: What does Mr. Dowling consider the status of the Grant Thornton reports to be now?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: There is, therefore, a big problem here. Universally, farmers I speak to consider the Grant Thornton reports to be fudges, at best, and potentially even whitewashes in the sense that farmers consider them to reinforce the proposition of Meat Industry Ireland, MII. In many cases, the reports acknowledge that they are heavily reliant on the industry for whatever information they contain....
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: Let me rephrase that. Did the beef task force take any specific steps to publicise the new entitlements that were available to farmers as a result of that agreement?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: The beef task force has put the minutes on the website to ensure that farmers are aware of their entitlements. That is essentially the response to that. Are the witnesses satisfied that the processors are honouring their side of the agreements that were made?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: Is Mr. Dowling satisfied that, for example, weighing at processing plants is universally happening?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: We can say, then-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: So essentially, we are saying that the meat factories can pick and choose which aspects of the agreement they consider they are required to implement?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Beef Task Force: Discussion (6 Jul 2021)
Matt Carthy: Is there a mechanism there? An agreement has been in place. It was publicised to a degree. I am not sure if the detail of it has been conveyed to all farmers concerned. What recourse is there, when meat factories do not adhere to their end of that agreement?
