Seanad: Order of Business (4 Oct 2011)

Ivana Bacik: I am sure all Members will share with me in expressing condolences to the family of the little five year old girl who lost her life so tragically in the house fire in Boyle, County Roscommon. It is an appalling tragedy. I know all Members will want to share in sending condolences to her family. I renew the calls made for a debate on domestic violence. Calls for such a debate were made to...

Ivana Bacik: Senator Leyden is being excitable again.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: In response to Senator MacSharry, if Fianna Fail were a business, the electorate would have put it out of business.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: The electorate did put it out of business in February. It was Senator MacSharry's Government that set up the HSE, that set up this arm's length procedure of which he is now so critical. It is very difficult to take his anger-----

Ivana Bacik: His Government was in power for 14 years.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: Fianna Fáil was in power for 14 years while Fine Gael and the Labour Party have not even been in power for one year. Therefore, it is rather rich to hear these critiques.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: I compliment the Leader and colleagues on the excellent debate on human rights with Dr. Maurice Manning in attendance in the House yesterday.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: It was an example of how the Seanad can operate at its best with the Gallery full, by having an informed debate, with as many Senators as possible contributing to it within the short time available-----

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: -----and Dr. Manning giving a very considered, thoughtful and insightful response. This is a sign to us that we must do more of this.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: The motion on today's Order Paper, amending the terms of reference of the Seanad Public Consultation Committee, again gives us a better opportunity to engage with the public and in public consultation. It is part of the ongoing process of reform of Seanad procedures in which we are engaged in this Government, which was sadly neglected under the previous Government. I also thank colleagues...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: -----for a debate on third level education in light of the lobby by the Union of Students in Ireland, which many of us attended. The USI has an impressive and reasonable lobbying programme and it calls, reasonably enough, for a freeze on the student contribution currently set at €2,000, no introduction of any further fees and investment in the student assistance fund. It would be...

Ivana Bacik: We hope so.

Seanad: Company Closures: Motion (28 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: I welcome the Minister, Deputy Bruton, to the House and thank him for attending personally to deal with this important motion on the part of the Labour Party Senators. I am grateful to my colleague, Senator Landy, for proposing the motion, particularly given the area from which he comes and his local knowledge. I also acknowledge the presence in the Visitors' Gallery of Deputy Ann Phelan,...

Ivana Bacik: Sinn Féin supported it.

Seanad: Address by President of the Irish Human Rights Commission (28 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: I welcome Dr. Manning back to the Seanad in his capacity as president of the Irish Human Rights Commission. I enjoyed his address, as I am sure did all Members, as shown by the response he received. It is an auspicious time for him to come to the Seanad to speak to us on human rights, given that in a week's time, next Thursday, 6 October, we will see the periodic review of Ireland's human...

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: I thank Senators for their contributions. A number of common themes emerged. I will depart slightly from tradition before responding individually to them. A number of colleagues called for two debates and it is my intention to ask the Leader to arrange them as soon as possible. One is a debate on domestic violence, which Senators O'Donovan, Keane, MacSharry and Leyden called for....

Ivana Bacik: I thank the Senator; it is always nice to hear he is delighted.

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Sep 2011)

Ivana Bacik: We are not debating the Senator's Bill, but No. 12, motion No. 7. I will ask the Leader about having those debates on housing and NAMA with the Minister of State, Deputy Penrose, and on domestic violence with the Minister, Deputy Shatter. However, regretfully I cannot accept the amendment to the Order of Business today, given the business before the House today.
