Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Social Media: Discussion (6 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: The office has a good website and publications. Has it considered developing a more high profile presence on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and ask.fm? These are the forums where the children are found.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Social Media: Discussion (6 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: I welcome Ms O'Keeffe's presentation. I am embarrassed to say that when the Minister referred to the Office for Internet Safety in his presentation, I thought it sounded like a group we should invite in. I did not realise that representatives of the office were the next to speak. I regret to say I had never heard of the Office for Internet Safety before this morning, which is probably even...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Social Media: Discussion (6 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: In all debates on this issue thus far, I have not heard mention of an office for Internet safety. Perhaps as part of its work on this issue the committee should consider the establishment of such an office. On international experience, the Minister has outlined the difficulties arising outside of this jurisdiction. It is hard to believe that no work has been done on development of an...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Social Media: Discussion (6 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: That would be welcome.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Social Media: Discussion (6 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: I welcome the Minister and, in particular, his presentation. In this topical debate, which will be interesting to a wider audience, it is important that the Minister set the scene for-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Social Media: Discussion (6 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: It is important that the scene be set for the committee's upcoming work. Some 99% of online media content is positive and has been embraced by communities, including our own. We are probably discussing 1% of the 1% remainder. It is difficult to grapple with it. In his presentation, the Minister identified the gap in legislation. I am interested in this matter. Various companies, for...

Noel Harrington: To ask the Minister for Social Protection if she will review the application for carer's allowance in respect of a person (details supplied) to include further medical evidence submitted subsequent to the original decision by the deciding officer; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11279/13]

Written Answers — Department of Defence: Defence Forces Reserve Reorganisation (5 Mar 2013)

Noel Harrington: To ask the Minister for Defence the reason the briefing on the reorganisation of the Reserve Defence Forces in the allocated training centre under the jurisdiction of the 12th Battalion Limerick did not take place in Skibbereen as previously agreed and directed by the Chief of Staff thus incurring high costs for each of the members of the reserve forces; and if he will make a statement on the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Port of Cork Company: Discussion with Chairman Designate (27 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: I welcome the chairman designate for the Port of Cork, Mr. Mullins, and his appointment. We should pay tribute to the outgoing chairman, Mr. Dermot O'Mahony, under whose stewardship the port has developed and significantly expanded, including through cruise ship traffic. I am pleased Mr. Mullins will continue with Mr. O'Mahony's work in the port, including the provision of new facilities in...

Written Answers — Department of Social Protection: Supplementary Welfare Allowance Applications (26 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: To ask the Minister for Social Protection the position regarding an appeal for community welfare allowance in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Cork while waiting for their application for disability allowance to be processed; if she will provide an update on the disability allowance application; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10053/13]

Finance Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (20 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: I am grateful for the opportunity to speak on the Finance Bill 2013. It is obviously not a pleasant experience to introduce property taxes and so forth but we must concentrate on the positive measures in the Bill. The SME sector has been spoken about a lot in this Chamber today and it will benefit from the Bill. We must take corrective measures because this Government inherited a country...

Finance Bill 2013: Second Stage (Resumed) (20 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: Difficult decisions must be taken and Deputy Ferris knows exactly what I am talking about. I know that Deputy Ferris's compass is generally working but maybe once there was a slip-up along the line. He knows exactly what happened. We are doing the best we can. It is acknowledged that Ministers, Ministers of State and Deputies are working extremely hard to rebuild the country's reputation...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Funding the Broadcasting Sector: Discussion with Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (20 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: I spent 12 years on a local authority and only a few times did I see a local radio journalist at the meetings.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Funding the Broadcasting Sector: Discussion with Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (20 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: It does. Our interest in public service broadcasting would be for current affairs programmes but it could be an entirely different interest for someone else. I take the point.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Funding the Broadcasting Sector: Discussion with Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (20 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: I have one or two questions. I apologise for just arriving but if the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland had some insight on bi-location, it might help a few of us. I was pleased to receive a copy of the presentation. It might be helpful to get an overview of the radio stations represented, which are national, regional and local. Will the witnesses indicate who owns the stations? In...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Funding the Broadcasting Sector: Discussion with Independent Broadcasters of Ireland (20 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: That would not apply in my area. It is an example.

Other Questions: Road Safety Statistics (19 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: I thank the Minister. If we are to tackle the safety figures, we need to know the reasons. Fatigue is one such reason, but another reason for single vehicle accidents is linked to a different strategy, namely, our suicide strategy. That there may be a link is regrettable. That the evidence is only anecdotal is a pity. The RSA's figures make no reference to this link. Perhaps something...

Other Questions: Road Safety Statistics (19 Feb 2013)

Noel Harrington: To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if he will provide a breakdown of road fatalities in 2012; if he will provide comparative figures for each of the past ten years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8394/13]
