- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Rural Hubs, Broadband and Mobile Phone Coverage in Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (2 Dec 2020)
Róisín Garvey: On the €5 million that was provided in the budget, two social enterprise hubs in Clare were forced to close because they could not compete with the low prices of the local authority Wi-Fi hub being developed in the area. Social enterprise is important as well. Can social enterprises apply for funding for hubs or is this provision only available through the broadband officers? When...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Rural Hubs, Broadband and Mobile Phone Coverage in Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (2 Dec 2020)
Róisín Garvey: There is fibre broadband in some villages and towns but they do not have Wi-Fi hubs. They are important from a social and mental health perspective as well. It is important provision of them is not narrowed to only areas where there is no broadband. I hope Dr. O'Connor understands my point.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Rural Hubs, Broadband and Mobile Phone Coverage in Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (2 Dec 2020)
Róisín Garvey: That would be to talk about rural broadband in a general sense. I am totally with the Deputy that we need it, but the roll out of rural broadband is a different Department from this Department of Rural and Community Development. I was going to email my pre-budget submission to the Department. I have calculated and number crunched around how one could do it for between €10,000 and...

- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Engagement on Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (2 Dec 2020)
Róisín Garvey: I will be brief. I do not know how the Minister does it. I am wrecked just listening to all the comments on what is going on over Brexit. It is hard enough to be a Senator, not to mention sorting out the Brexit issue for the country. I am very interested in enterprise, trade and employment and rural development, on both of which I am spokesperson. We must have looked in great detail at...

- Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2020: Second Stage (1 Dec 2020)
Róisín Garvey: I welcome the Minister to the House. I have not had the opportunity to speak to him ever before. I have to say I do not always agree with his politics but in this case he is doing stellar work. I want to mention a few matters around the SME sector as I am the Green Party spokesperson for enterprise, trade and employment. On 9 September, the Government published the Brexit readiness action...

Róisín Garvey: It is not for the Minister of State.
- Seanad: Reopening Ireland (Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment): Statements (26 Nov 2020)
Róisín Garvey: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I attended a meeting on rural isolation earlier with Muintir na Tíre, Social Farming Ireland, Mental Health Ireland, the men’s shed movement and a few others. Isolation has always been an issue in rural Ireland, as the Minister of State will be probably know as a man from Meath, where there are plenty of rural areas, but no more so...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 Nov 2020)
Róisín Garvey: I wish to raise in the House something that has come to my attention in the last few months. The fact is that we need to do more for our old people. They are probably suffering the most. I am receiving telephone calls from many old people who have major concerns. Some of them live in cold houses. They have been in contact with me since August about it, but nothing has been done. Some of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Unemployment Payment Scheme: Department of Social Protection (25 Nov 2020)
Róisín Garvey: It is amazing what people can do when they are under pressure. I compliment the Department of Social Protection on the number of people who were given some kind of respite in the pandemic because it was quite a shocking occurrence. The pandemic hit us overnight. Nobody saw it coming at the level it did. The Department did amazing work and kept many people sane and above water. I thank...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Unemployment Payment Scheme: Department of Social Protection (25 Nov 2020)
Róisín Garvey: I concur completely. We should be able to do post them out to people who cannot get into us. Not everybody has a printer and not everybody can do things online. At least we can do that much for them. It is great that people who get seasonal work over Christmas will not have to worry about availing of the PUP up to the end of March. Does the Department envisage that the PUP will...
