- Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: We have to give a bit of hope back to the people.
- Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: We need to return to the policies of positivity and progression. People in areas that are dying on their feet are acting up and will do so to an increasing extent in the near future. I foresee that many of these meetings will be held throughout the country because of the huge impact of the decline of rural society and the rural fabric of this country. It has been pointed out that...
- Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: Special needs pupils and the vulnerable are falling behind in all of this. Rural Ireland is falling behind as well. The loss of resource teachers for special needs pupils was also pointed out. I ask the Taoiseach, who has a real grasp of this issue, to discuss with the Minister for Education and Skills the implications of where we are going. We are sliding down in Europe, so to speak. We...
- Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: I, along with other public representatives in Kerry, attended a monster meeting in Caherciveen on Monday night regarding the future of our rural schools. Strong opinions were expressed regarding the frustration and concerns of parents, teachers and boards of management. A very dismal picture was painted of boarded-up schools and of many other schools which are in danger of a similar fate in...
- Leaders' Questions (11 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: The Taoiseach has a better grasp of this than probably any other public representative or any Deputy in this House today, as teaching was his profession. He is well aware of the situation facing rural schools. The Government has not been looking at many options to address the matter. It is not too late at this stage. It may be the 12th hour before the September term starts. The...

- Committee on Transport and Communications: Select Sub-Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Roads Bill 2014: Committee Stage (5 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: I welcome the amendment arising from Deputy O'Donovan's suggestions. It is very relevant to the situation regarding impediments to road developments. However, the Minister is aware of the fact that there is an impasse and a long, drawn-out saga concerning the further development of the Tralee to Dingle road. An Taisce is the body putting in the objections. Would this amendment resolve...

- European Debt: Motion (Resumed) [Private Members] (4 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: The Irish public has suffered in a similar manner to the other so-called "PIGS" countries. They are burdened with a debt of over €200 billion. In Ireland's case, the IMF calculated that every €100 of austerity would cost the economy €50 in lost growth and unemployment. This was the fiscal situation, and through the imposition of austerity on our defenceless public, the...
- Leaders' Questions (4 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: To compound matters, borrowers in many cases lost their jobs in the recession and remain unemployed. It is unsustainable for these people to meet the huge arrears and to live in their homes. I ask the Taoiseach to act diligently in the work he has been doing since last week and will continue over the next number of months. I ask him personally to give this matter his full time and attention.
- Leaders' Questions (4 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: The number of debt deals being processed through the new insolvency agency has been dismal up to now to say the least. In the first half of 2014, fewer than 30 cases were being processed. I hope there will be a positive outcome from the Taoiseach's engagement last week on the new agency. All the evidence is that the banks do not want to deal with the majority of people in debt distress....
- Leaders' Questions (4 Feb 2015)
Tom Fleming: I welcome the Taoiseach's intervention in the house repossession crisis. The number of court proceedings for house repossessions is rising at an alarming rate. In 2014 approximately 10,000 new applications for repossession were made to the courts. Between 1 and 10 January 2015, more than 1,400 court applications were made. According to all of the indications, there will an avalanche of...
