- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)

- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: Is the amendment being pressed?
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: Amendments Nos. 4 to 6, inclusive, 12 and 13, 19 to 21, inclusive, and 29 are related. Amendment No. 13 is a physical alternative to No. 12. Amendments Nos. 20 and 21 are physical alternatives to No. 19. Amendments Nos. 4 to 6, inclusive, 12 and 13, 19 to 21, inclusive, and 29 may be discussed together by agreement. That is a bit of a mouthful.

Paschal Mooney: I urger the Senator not to indulge in a Second Stage speech.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I do not wish to restrict the Senator.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: This is the time to respond to the Minister of State.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: This reminds me somewhat of the county council meetings I used to attend. When a motion was agreed, every member felt it was necessary to stand up and thank everybody. Silence is not non-acceptance, and there are many amendments to be discussed. The Minister has accepted the amendment but will bring forward his own wording on Report Stage. Go raibh maith aige.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: May I give some advice? I do not wish to go into lecturing mode but, as I said earlier, there are a number of amendments tabled by a collective group of Members. I hope that as we progress we could perhaps appoint a spokesperson to thank the Minister, rather than allowing each person to say it, as in the old song "Thank You Very Very Much, Mr. Eastwood".
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I say it for purely practical reasons. It will also spare the Minister's blushes. Incidentally, I hope this is creating a precedent for this legislation.
- Seanad: Gender Recognition Bill 2014: Committee Stage (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: There would be a view that there are inherent flaws in this legislation and if, as seems likely, the Government will not accept the amendments being put before the House, this amendment would go some way to at least addressing question marks that have arisen about the drafting of the Bill and the substantive nature of some of the proposals contained therein. If the Bill is to pass in its...
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I have a great deal of sympathy with Senator Landy in respect of Bus Éireann. Although he did not spell it out, I assume this might be an expressway service that operates between Dublin and points further south. Unfortunately, we had a similar situation in the north west, where Bus Éireann withdrew the service and when the issue was raised about subsidisation, I was informed there...
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: No. I simply am making the point that there is no subsidy for expressway services, which I could never quite understand-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: -----and as a result, what is happening in Carrick-on-Suir has happened in several places in my own part of the world. I would like to expand slightly on, and ask the Leader a question about, the remarks of my colleague, Senator O'Sullivan, about the Russian overflight. We face an increasingly serious and potentially dangerous stand-off between Russia, the EU and now the United States with...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Dairy Industry: Bord Bia, ICOS and Positive Farmers (3 Feb 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I echo all that has been stated by my colleagues. I thank Mr. Cotter for his excellent presentation. Like Deputy Pringle, I am not from a farming background but a small, rural town that relied heavily on the surrounding farming economy. I am increasingly aware of the changes and challenges. In my home town of Drumshanbo, we have a food hub that has developed a concept that I understand is...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: Discussion (29 Jan 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I am impressed by the breadth of expertise that has been provided to the committee. We do not know the details of the takeover offer but the witnesses have provided a lot of context and background. I am old enough to remember, as an emigrant, that I could not afford to travel by air-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: Discussion (29 Jan 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I am aware of that and I thank the Chairman. I could not afford to travel by air from London to Dublin because it was the most expensive route in the world due to the operation of a cartel. Would that be the outcome if IAG bought Aer Lingus? In fact, consolidation has proven that the consumer loses out, internationally, because prices go up. Do the witnesses believe the most profitable...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: Discussion (29 Jan 2015)
Paschal Mooney: I thought that might be the case.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: Discussion (29 Jan 2015)
Paschal Mooney: You are either in favour of it or you are not. With respect, that was the basis of the question I asked.
