Seanad: Water Safety (23 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for being present. This matter concerns rescue services on Lough Ree, the second largest lake on the River Shannon, covering an area of over 10,500 hectares. There are two very successful fishing clubs in the Athlone area and there are similar clubs in counties Longford and Roscommon. Many companies operate passenger boats and offer pleasure cruises on Lough...

Seanad: Water Safety (23 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I thank the Minister of State for her response, the tenor of which I anticipated. I would have thought Waterways Ireland would be responsible for providing rescue services on our lakes. I ask her to bring this matter to the attention of the Minister, Deputy Pat Carey, who might then discuss it with the Minister for Transport, Deputy Noel Dempsey. I intend to contact the former because...

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I express my disappointment at the events outlined by Senator Ó Murchú and empathise with him. I am disappointed that he was offended by Members of this House. We should treat each other with dignity and respect, and I would expect that from each and every Member of this House. I am disappointed to hear he was treated in such a way. I concur with the comments of Senators Coffey and...

Seanad: Order of Business. (22 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: The second HIQA report on Loughloe House was published at noon today. Of the 37 actions required on foot of the initial inspection, 30 have been taken. I ask the Leader and my colleagues across the floor whether they want to close our public facilities for the elderly. That is what the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Harney, intends to do in regard to Ofalia House in Tullamore,...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (22 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I extend my sympathy to Mrs. Callanan and her family on the death of Peter. I met Peter on the very first day I came to this House. I came here in tremendous sadness after a very sad experience in my life. He was very sweet and decent to me. I will never forget him for as long as I live. I went on to tell him that my wedding reception had been in Innishannon which bound me to him...

Seanad: Provision of Health Services by the HSE: Statements (Resumed) (16 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I wish to share one minute of my time with Senator Mullen. I thank the Minister for being here and I, too, will cut to the chase. I am sorry for being parochial, but I must be. Like Senator Feeney, I consider that the glass is always half-full, but the situation in the Athlone and Mullingar area services of the HSE is desperate. Only yesterday I received a reply from a consultant to whom I...

Seanad: Provision of Health Services by the HSE: Statements (Resumed) (16 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: My final point is on HIQA. The HSE has become a monster behind which we can hide. There must be accountability and the buck must stop somewhere. I worry that HIQA is being used as cover. Issues can be addressed without closing facilities.

Nicky McFadden: He does not like good news.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: What about the green agenda?

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: Yesterday my colleague, Senator Burke, asked the Leader to invite the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to the House to discuss turf cutting. I also heard a flashy radio advertisement yesterday encouraging people to contact the Department to register the fact that they were to be banned from cutting turf. Where will this end? Why has the Minister not engaged with...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: He has not.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I have raised this issue many times in the Seanad. It is an invasion of the people of rural Ireland. Where will it end? The individuals concerned cut turf for their domestic use. They are not raping the countryside, as has been alleged by the Green Party.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: I ask the Deputy Leader to invite his party leader to come to the House for an open and frank discussion on the issue. In fact, while discussions are taking place, he should put in place a pilot scheme, whereby people could continue to cut turf for their domestic use. I am not referring to industrialised turf cutting but to people being able to keep warm when there is no money for other fuels.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: What about the people who are being banned from cutting their bogs, who are making representations to me? Those are the people who are talking to me.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (3 Jun 2010)

Nicky McFadden: Will the Deputy Leader say how many years this Administration has been in Government?
