- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I welcome the State's return to the bond markets yesterday, when bonds worth â¬3.5 billion were floated on a three year rather than a two-year basis. The NTMA is to be complimented on this manoeuvre. There could be another one in the pipeline, please God. This scotches any need for a second bailout which some people have been talking about. It indicates investor appetite and confidence...
- Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I am sure the Leader's response will be able to calm Senator O'Brien and his colleagues.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: In following Senator Mooney's comments, which set the tone on another issue today, as did other contributions, I compliment the Leader on his handling of what was a difficult interview. He was barracked continuously but in my view handled it in a very fair and balanced way in regard to the constitutional requirements and obligations of this House. I say to Senator Mooney that of course we...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Yes. There was also the debate on the jobs initiative which was very useful. I look forward to those ideas going to the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Bruton, and other Ministers, as the Leader outlined. My question for the Leader is on a slightly different matter but we do not want to get confused. I agree with previous speakers in regard to generic prescription...
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: The Cathaoirleach knows how respectful I am. However, he invited me to ask a question. Will the Leader provide time in due course to allow the House to debate that report? Although I have no doubt the report was very well-meaning, and I compliment the members of that committee, it may be too restrictive.
- Seanad: Order of Business (25 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: It would be remiss of Members not to mention Mick O'Dwyer and to congratulate him on his Hall of Fame award.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: That is not really what I wished to do.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I have just been reminded, and rightly so, that the Minister, Deputy Deenihan, has been named Kerry man of the year and Members also congratulate him. There will be a night next March on which he can be duly and properly honoured. The Cathaoirleach might wish to talk about the Mayo man of the year in a minute.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: The subject about which I wish to speak is the wonderful idea of inviting Pope Benedict to Ireland. I have no doubt that the bishops have already invited him to the Eucharistic Congress but it also would be appropriate that the Taoiseach should invite him to visit the country, and no doubt such a visit would happen at that time. I am delighted by Senator Mullins's report of a meeting of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I have no doubt that Mr. David Cooney, Secretary General at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and ambassador designate to the Holy See, and the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown, have already been in communication with each other. These two men are wonderful, superb diplomats.
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Everything will fall into place on this issue. I recently had a brief meeting with the Tánaiste and have no doubt that matters are being dealt with in the proper manner. There is no need to make a big ballyhoo of the issue. Matters will settle down and-----

Paul Coghlan: I wish to ask the Deputy Leader-----
- Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Yes, I was coming to it. The Tánaiste previously indicated to the Leader that he would come before the House to discuss embassies and other diplomatic matters. Will the Deputy Leader indicate when this is likely to happen?
- Seanad: Report of Advisory Group on Small Business: Statements (Resumed) (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: I give a warm welcome to the Minister of State, Deputy John Perry. I thank him for his commitment to the House which he has attended on a number of occasions and his contributions on each occasion have been worthwhile. It is clear from the comprehensive statement he made in the House earlier in the debate that the Government is aware of the importance of the small business sector to the...
- Seanad: Report of Advisory Group on Small Business: Statements (Resumed) (19 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: There are mistakes and errors in the system. Although Mr. John Trethowan and his staff are doing a very good job, many are not aware of the office. They do not know they can submit an appeal when they are refused credit. Perhaps more use might be made of this facility. Mr. Trethowan, a former banker, is a good and practical man. Everything is so centralised in the two pillar banks that...
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (18 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: Senators O'Brien and Daly are as hasty as ever in seeking a referendum on the fiscal contract framework arising from the recent summit.
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (18 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: They know well the matter is only at drafting stage and all the countries are making submissions or having an input. As the Taoiseach has stated, it would be very wise to await the final text because we cannot know if treaty change is required until there is a final text.

Paul Coghlan: I request the Leader------
- Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (18 Jan 2012)
Paul Coghlan: The Cathaoirleach knows he is not making a point of order.
