Seanad: Annual Transition Statement on Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015: Statements (9 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Aire as ucht a theacht isteach inniu. Tá sé go deas é a fheiceáil sa Teach seo. I see Senator Boylan is here so I shall take this opportunity to thank the entire membership of the Joint Committee on Climate Action, of which she is a member, Deputy Leddin, the Chair of the committee, and members from parties and none, who have worked night...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Supports to the Islands and Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (9 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: I thank the officials for coming to the committee today. Water has been mentioned. Is there any rainwater harvesting in the islands? To me this would be a no-brainer because, as we know, the west gets tonnes of rain. Cubic metres of water can be stored easily, which is 1,000 litres per cubic metre. This can go a long way. I have seen at first hand how it gets put into schools and halls....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Supports to the Islands and Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (9 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: Is the information on the town and village renewal scheme on the Department's website or has it been removed? Mr. Parnell spoke about supports for farmers' markets.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Supports to the Islands and Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (9 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: The point I was making was that it can be very hard to get a central space in a town or village because often local authorities like to keep them for car parking. It has been a battle for many villages to get a good space because it is not prioritised. Car parking space supersedes farmers' markets space. That is the battle throughout the country, to call a spade a spade.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Supports to the Islands and Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (9 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: I have seen some good examples but it can be a battle.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Pandemic Supports to the Islands and Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (9 Dec 2020)

Seanad: Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Consequential Provisions) Bill 2020: Committee Stage (3 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: I thank the Minister of State for coming here. I have got sad in the Chamber twice but today I will just get mad. I come from Clare. I can speak only for my own county. We need this more than anything ever before, and I commend Senator Casey on bringing this proposal forward. The tourism and small business sectors have been crucified. This is the last thing they need. It is a real kick...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Broadcasting Sector (2 Dec 2020)

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Broadcasting Sector (2 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: We will have to get one for Senator Crowe anyway.

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Broadcasting Sector (2 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: I thank the Minister of State. It would be good to have that response circulated to Members but I would like a copy of it also.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (2 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: With regard to remote working hubs, sometimes bureaucracy and multidisciplinary departments make it very confusing for people. I want to clearly outline something today for my colleagues after a meeting this morning with the Department of Rural and Community Development. One of its top civil servants, Dr. Stjohn O'Connor, clarified for us some of the information on remote working hubs...

Seanad: Irish Nationality and Citizenship (Naturalisation of Minors Born in Ireland) Bill 2018: Committee Stage (2 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: On behalf of the Green Party, I welcome the opportunity to speak on the Bill. Under the then Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, our colleague, Senator McDowell, the 27th amendment to the Constitution, which was passed in 2004, removed the automatic right to citizenship upon birth. Once it had been passed, children born in Ireland lost the constitutional right to citizenship upon...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection: Rural Hubs, Broadband and Mobile Phone Coverage in Rural Ireland: Department of Rural and Community Development (2 Dec 2020)

Róisín Garvey: As a person who has used the Wi-Fi hub in Ennistymon, I have to say "thanks a million" to the Department. The hub has been great. I worked remotely for 14 years full-time at home on my own and it was a very lonely place. When the Wi-Fi hubs started opening, I could not wait to use them, even if only for one day a week. They make a significant difference. It is great. Thanks to Covid, we...
