Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for Older People: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: I am delighted that the committee is doing this report collectively. I brought it to the committee but it has been endorsed as something we can do as a joint committee. It is not mine, rather it comes from everybody within this committee. It arose on the back of a weekly programme on Fridays that had a couple of irate panellists who said the Government had some cheek in asking them to give...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for Older People: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: I thank the witnesses for sticking with us today because the meeting has run an hour over time. We are up against the clock as the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Skills is due to meet in this room shortly. The witnesses will be in no doubt that the members have a huge interest in today's topic. If they have further examples or information that can benefit us policy-wise then...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Business of Joint Committee (19 Apr 2018)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Issues Impacting Apartments and Multi-Unit Developments (19 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: At the request of the broadcasting and recording services, members and visitors in the Public Gallery are requested to ensure that for the duration of the meeting their mobile phones are turned off completely or switched to aeroplane, safe or flight mode, depending on the device. It is not sufficient to put phones on silent mode as this will maintain a level of interference with the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing Agency: Chairperson Designate (19 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: To be fair to Mr. Carey, he has said that he would like time to engage with the Housing Executive and go into that detailed discussion with it in the next few days. He has only been here a couple of days and he has asked for time to have that engagement and those briefing sessions. It is only fair not to put him on the spot for figures like that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing Agency: Chairperson Designate (19 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: I think he said unquestionably that it is a good proportion. It would be unfair to get a figure from Mr. Carey today. I call Deputy O'Brien.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing Agency: Chairperson Designate (19 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: I apologise for having to step out to attend a meeting of the Business Committee. I missed Mr. Carey's opening statement, but I had read it. I do not question his rationale for applying for this post. I do not question his ability in any shape or form. Deputy Darragh O'Brien is right in saying this needs energy, enthusiasm. We need people who want results and who do not stop unless...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for Older People: Discussion (17 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: I will join Deputy Casey in the last round.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for Older People: Discussion (17 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: I will not go near the housing adaptation grants. However, I have focused on this issue for many years and since I was elected to the Dáil I have been doing a fair amount of work and research on the area. When one considers the statistics for the next 20 years or so, which show that we will have 1.4 million people over 65 years of age, we have a prime opportunity here to make a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: Housing for Older People: Discussion (17 Apr 2018)

Maria Bailey: The trouble is that the funding comes from different mechanisms so there is a bit of work to do around that. I thank all the witnesses for attending the committee this morning. I really hope that this is an ongoing engagement. All members of the committee want to see action fairly quickly on this issue although it may take a while to come to fruition and for people to see what is being...

Affordable Housing: Statements (Resumed) (29 Mar 2018)

Maria Bailey: -----to come forward with those ideas and not lead people up the garden path without an answer. I always have been solution-focused, and Deputies might not agree with me - Deputy Mattie McGrath made charges against me earlier - but I absolutely know where my moral compass is, and it is to help people who need our help. However, I am just not animated about it because I am practical about it.
