Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Service 2023
Vote 42 - Rural and Community Development (Supplementary)
(22 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: Deputy, let the Minister finish. We only have nine minutes. I know that Pobal is doing some work in this area and that tremendous work is being done in the All-Island Research Observatory, AIRO, in Maynooth as well. I am sure it is something that the committee could engage on further with Maynooth University and Pobal to deal with it. I think it would be useful.

Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Service 2023
Vote 42 - Rural and Community Development (Supplementary)
(22 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: I have two brief questions for the Minister. The first relates to the digital innovation fund that was run by her Department. We had a first round of funding in relation to that. There are a number of projects that came through the first round of funding that now need to be scaled up in the second phase. We were promised a second phase in relation to it but we still do not know what is...

Select Committee on Social Protection: Estimates for Public Service 2023
Vote 42 - Rural and Community Development (Supplementary)
(22 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: When working with dog owners on responsible ownership, I hope the issue of dog fouling is also addressed. It is a scourge on footpaths throughout the country. What is going on is absolutely appalling. It is a lack of enforcement. A small level of enforcement would do a lot. If people own a dog, they have to clean up after it, full stop. Instead, often the dogs are fouling outside the...

Select Committee on Social Protection: Message to Dáil (22 Nov 2023)

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: Given Ireland's prominent role in the life sciences and pharmaceutical sectors, where nearly 90% of employees in these fields are engaged in patent medicine related work, the establishment of the EU unified patent court is poised to significantly benefit this country. Recognising this, the Government has expressed its intention to participate in the unitary patent system and the unified...

Science Week: Statements (16 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: I am unsure, a Leas-Cheann Comhairle, what all of these canvassers are going to do now for the next election. They will all be very bored.

Science Week: Statements (16 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: Maybe.

Science Week: Statements (16 Nov 2023)

Denis Naughten: I thank the Ceann Comhairle and the Business Committee for selecting this debate and the Minister and Chief Whip for facilitating it. Ireland's forthcoming membership of CERN will not only provide new opportunities for Irish researchers, but also challenge the underlying ethos of research itself in this country. This funding of €2 million annually for CERN's research initiatives...

Denis Naughten: It has been a year since this House unanimously supported a motion to extend special support for all front-line workers suffering from long Covid, yet today that commitment remains unfulfilled. While the Department of Health and the HSE have agreed to extend special payments for a period in excess of 28 months to 143 healthcare staff afflicted with long Covid symptoms, we must question the...
