Seanad: Fisheries Sector: Statements (12 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: The farmer is important. After all, he or she is the supplier.

Seanad: Fisheries Sector: Statements (12 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I live with farmers.

Seanad: Fisheries Sector: Statements (12 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Go raibh maith agat, a Chathaoirligh. Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire. I shall start where Senator Hayden has left off and mention a theme which has emerged in agriculture and fisheries which I hope the Minister defends stridently. He is beginning to favour the big guy completely over the small guy. In agriculture that means the meat processor is being favoured over the beef farmer and,...

Seanad: Education (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2014: Fifth Stage (12 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: My concern is that universities across the world are not always called universities. For example, Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a world-famous university that does not have the word "university" in its title. Its reputation sells. Why can RCSI, which is well known here, not market itself as RCSI abroad without being called a university? It is a bit deceptive. My concern is for...

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I support the well articulated call for a debate on domestic violence. Last Monday, I attended a COPE event in Galway. There are 800 reported cases of domestic violence in Galway this year in which the victims required shelter from their partners or spouses, the abusers. That is the situation at local level. The report from the Garda Inspectorate is excellent and necessary. It is clear...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: This is wrong, it is unacceptable and I look forward to that debate in this House with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine in attendance.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I support the proposed amendment to the Order of Business that the Adoption (Identity and Information) Bill 2014, authored by Senator Averil Power and co-sponsored by Senator Jillian van Turnhout and I, be introduced today. Those of us who have access to our birth certificates are fortunate; it is a facility which is not yet available to adopted persons. We in this House have an opportunity...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I certainly am seeking a debate on it. There is too much monopolising in the sector, with meat processors having way too much control. Even the processing of offal is controlled by one man and one factory. As I understand it, there have been threats that offal will not be taken unless the price drops by 20 cent.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: We need an economic debate in the House with the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Deputy Richard Bruton. Last Sunday's The Sunday Business Postcarried a major feature on a financier speaking in this country at the weekend on the reason investors will not invest in this country. He gave two major reasons, one is because of our high level of debt-to-GDP ratio and the second one...

Seanad: Irish Water: Statements (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I appreciate that. In deference to all of us in this House who have burst ourselves to look for this time, could I ask the Cathaoirleach and the Leader to organise an extension of time?

Seanad: Irish Water: Statements (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I would add to that.

Seanad: Irish Water: Statements (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I understand.

Seanad: Irish Water: Statements (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I ask the Acting Leader to be fair on this point.

Seanad: Irish Water: Statements (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I am looking for what the Irish people need.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: On a point of order, does that add an extra hour to the debate? If not, that is not what is being voted on.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: On a point of order, that would mean that some people will not get into the debate at all and it is unfair as some people will be speaking twice.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: I appeal to the Cathaoirleach.

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: On a point of order, I appeal to the Leader and to the House on an issue as fundamental and important to the nation as water-----

Seanad: Order of Business (5 Nov 2014)

Fidelma Healy Eames: -----that adequate time is given to this debate. It is not mathematically feasible to achieve what is being proposed.
