Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. Tom Arnold (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: Let us nominate him.

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. Tom Arnold (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: From sexism to ageism.

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. Tom Arnold (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: The very fact that I am an odd man means I fit in very well with the company of women. I regard myself as an honorary gender-neutral person here. I echo the compliments paid to Mr. Arnold, who has been a friend of mine for many years. I have always greatly admired his work on behalf of international charities, particularly Concern. He has always been a gentlemanly, affable and generally...

Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by Mr. Tom Arnold (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: An example is the blasphemy business, which was complete nonsense. I remember saying, when the Bill on blasphemy was debated in the House, that within a matter of weeks some of the Muslim countries would point to Ireland as an example. Within a month Pakistan did so, but both Houses pushed the legislation through on the instruction of the Government. That is another example of why we...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: And for lots of single fathers.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: What about leakages?

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: It must be 20 years since I referred to the plight of single fathers for the first time in this House. I wish to do so again today, albeit in particularly tragic circumstances, that is, of a woman who was brought to hospital - I believe she was 39 weeks pregnant - in a state of cardiac arrest. Her baby daughter was delivered by Caesarean section but was severely brain-damaged and could not...

Seanad: Order of Business (16 Jan 2014)

David Norris: And the hotel.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: In reply to Senator Denis Landy, if the Government lives up to its promise, which I doubt, in terms of proper reform of Seanad Éireann, he may not be quite so reliant as he imagines on the local authorities. I hope this House will be democratised, as we were promised after being promised it would be extinguished. I do not intend to become involved in a load of political blather, of...

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (Resumed) and Final Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: They never went away.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: A Chathaoirligh, the defect in your ruling is in the wording. It is not your fault, because it clearly states "creates a charge on the Exchequer". Nothing is created.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: But it does not create anything. It could not create anything. It is there already, as the point has been argued by my colleague.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: One cannot create a potential anything. That is a hypothetical use of the non-existent and it is forbidden------

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Motion to Recommit (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: Can we have a reason for this? There may be something in it. If it is being recommitted to Committee Stage so that the committee can examine in a positive or even in a neutral light, then I have no difficulty with what the Senator is proposing.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: We are not doing that today. The Leader of the House said on the Order of Business the whole purpose of the Seanad is for discussion and open debate. We are closing it down in circumstances-----

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: -----which have been to the detriment of this country’s interests in the past.

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: Why? Can we have the reasons they are out of order?

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: What are the reasons for these amendments to be ruled out of order?

Seanad: Local Government Reform Bill 2013: Report Stage (15 Jan 2014)

David Norris: We should be all be apprised of these reasons. It is not good enough for democratic debate. This a further perversion of democracy. We have only been told about this five minutes before the debate. It is rubbish. Every single Member should be advised as to why their amendments are not allowed.
