- Seanad: Order of Business. - Budget Statement: Motion. (3 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: Members will remember the comments of the late Deputy Jim Mitchell on Knock Airport about the "foggy, boggy hillside". Now a Department is to be decentralised to that area which has a magnificent airport, built by Monsignor Horan and the former Taoiseach, Mr. Charles J. Haughey. It is a marvellous decision. I am delighted that Roscommon town has received 230 Land Registry jobs.
- Seanad: Order of Business. - Budget Statement: Motion. (3 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: This will create massive opportunities because of the need for the legal profession to have agents, as in Dublin. All legal firms have agents in Dublin who go to the Land Registry to examine files and make searches. These will now be required in Roscommon. We have registers of deaths, births and marriages so Roscommon town is the registry headquarters in Ireland â Roscommon, the registry...
- Seanad: Order of Business. - Budget Statement: Motion. (3 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: âand all the supporters of Fianna Fáil. We are very proud of this development. The last time I was in the Oireachtas, we got decentralisation. I am back and we have got it again. The last time I was here in 1992, I got the registry of deaths, births and marriages.
- Seanad: Order of Business. - Budget Statement: Motion. (3 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: It is more than a coincidence. In 1992 I asked the then Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds, to give us something for Roscommon. He gave us 50 jobs in the Department of Health and Children's general register office. Unfortunately, that decision was only implemented in 2003 after my return to the Oireachtas. The opening was attended by the Minister for Finance, Deputy McCreevy, and the Minister of...
- Seanad: Order of Business. - Budget Statement: Motion. (3 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: This decision represents a vote of confidence in the BMW region and specifically Roscommon. The jobs in Claremorris and Knock will have a spin-off effect for Ballaghadereen. The one disappointment is Boyle. I have no doubt that the chamber of commerce there is expressing regret that Boyle has not been successful as it was providing a free site for decentralisation. The Fianna Fáil and...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: The Senator should name and shame them.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: Fine Gael adopted it. It stole it from me.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: I thank Senators for the compliments. Will the Leader invite the Minister for Health and Children, Deputy Martin, to the House prior to the Christmas recess to discuss the European working time directive in regard to non-consultant hospital doctors? In his capacity as president of the Council of Health Ministers, Deputy Martin should get a further derogation to allow units at Roscommon,...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: A hospital without an accident and emergency unit is like a marriage or partnership without love. One cannot have one without the other.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (2 Dec 2003)
Terry Leyden: Roscommon Hospital must have an accident and emergency unit. I am delighted to be joined today by people who support that cause.
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2003)
Terry Leyden: This House should send a protest to the Israeli ambassador to Ireland regarding the erection of a new Berlin Wall around the State of Palestine by the Israeli Government. A photograph in today's Irish Independent graphically displays an 8 m high concrete wall around the city of Qalqilya that is cutting offâ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2003)
Terry Leyden: I expect most people will have seen page 17 of today's Irish Independent. This is the new Berlin wall, built by Israelis whose people were treated in a particularly difficult way during the Second World War. Now they are imitating the East German authorities in building a wall three times higher than the Berlin wall. They have cut off the city of Qalqilya. I spoke to the Palestinian...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2003)
Terry Leyden: There should be an emergency debate in this House prior to the recess. The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Cowen, will be assuming the Presidency of the European Union from 1 January and will have tremendous influence as regards the Israelis. However, they have turned down the United States of America which has withdrawn $290 million in loans from Israel because it was being used to...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2003)
Terry Leyden: It is already built and is 900 kms in length. When the President of the European Parliament, Mr. Pat Cox, comes into the House, he should be told that he, too, can play a role in this regard. We should condemn in the strongest possible manner the approach of the Israeli Government and its treatment of the Palestinians. Finallyâ
- Seanad: Order of Business. (27 Nov 2003)
Terry Leyden: âas regards access to Bethlehem, the location of the nativity 2,000 years ago, we should ensure that Christians are able to go there.

Terry Leyden: It is getting worse.
