Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2012)

Paul Coghlan: The Minister did not mean what Senator O'Brien attributed to him.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2012)

Paul Coghlan: No.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2012)

Paul Coghlan: That was not said.

Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (25 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I draw the attention of the Leader and the House to the recent Northern Executive and Assembly initiative whereby a levy is being placed on large retail properties with sizeable retail valuations, with the proceeds to be used to reduce rates for smaller businesses. We have heard Senator Denis Landy and many others speak about this issue in the recent past and all know how businesses are...

Seanad: Report of Tribunal of Inquiry into Certain Planning Matters and Payments: Statements (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House and I thank her for her commitment, observations and views on this report. It is important we agree that we are dealing with this subject, given the seriousness of the report and the awful picture it painted. It is a report of profound significance, which arose out of the serious public concern in respect of allegations of corruption in respect...

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Our colleague and Leader of the Opposition, Senator Darragh O'Brien, started sensibly this morning when he spoke about the issues of pyrite and conciliation. We support him in that regard, but then he went totally silly when he turned to water.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I think the Senator gets my drift. As he well knows, there will be buckets of time.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: As it will all be worked out sensibly, I advise Senator Darragh O'Brien to desist from putting this matter at the top of the agenda. No one will pay for water for another two years at least. As we know, contrary to what Senator David Norris would have us believe, water needs treatment, which is expensive. It must be piped, which is also expensive. Reservoirs are needed.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I did not say it was scarce, but it is precious.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Yes, of course. On the other matter, the stability treaty is a no-brainer.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: It is not; it is an insurance policy that is sensibly required. It is not about saving; we will not be able to save for years. If we do not have access to the ESM, we could be bunched if the country needed a second bail-out.

Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Yes and there is a gap of €15 billion to be bridged and the matter has nothing to do with the banks.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (19 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I wish to be associated with the well deserved warm tributes to Myles Staunton. I did not know him as well as some of the members but I greatly enjoyed hearing the tributes and know that they are well deserved. Neither did I have the opportunity or privilege of serving with him in this House. Any time I met him he was always bubbly and good humoured. As has been said, he was truly...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Senator Norris made a very interesting point this morning as regards the length of time it takes for a cheque to clear through the system. Clearing house practices and rules exist but we need full accountability and transparency in this regard. I wish to add to his call for a debate on banking and the economy. In regard to banking, it is important that we know that everyone in the two...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (19 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: You were not due back the following Sunday.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: What about Taca?

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I was surprised to hear the litany that was set out by my good friend and colleague, Senator Darragh O'Brien, aided by some of his colleagues. All it could do is sow confusion, especially as the Cabinet clarified all the major matters on water charging yesterday. We know there will be no charge before 2014 and how precious and scarce water is. We know about the cost of water treatment,...

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2012)

Paul Coghlan: The lakes require management also.
