Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (24 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: I also want to support the comments made by Senator Malcolm Byrne yesterday on the increase in cases being brought to the High Court in respect of assessments of needs. I support the call for a debate on the issue. Both the HSE and the Minister have attended the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism, and the reality is that people are waiting over two years on assessments of needs. Indeed,...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: I welcome everyone here. I have engaged with some of them over the past 12 months while myself and my party colleagues, Deputies Cannon and Bruton and Senator Buttimer, put together our submission to the commission on behalf of Fine Gael. The VAT reduction is very welcome and was supported by all parties and none. I would support the reduction, if not the abolition, of the levy. The...

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: On that, should it be the case that with the college degree and work experience they could link in with the various media groups throughout the college period and get that practical work experience while in college, rather than coming out more raw by not having done that? Is that something that could be done?

Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Future Business Model Plans and Long-term Vision for the Media Sector: Discussion (24 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: I have one point to make and a quote to read. I forget who made one comment earlier, but it concerned shops not carrying the newspapers. I am a small retailer and I carry newspapers. I have had varying experiences, including having to get a second delivery company to supply one particular paper, at a high cost to me, just to be able to carry that one publication, despite my own distributor...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: I support the comments of my colleague Senator Kyne on the national children's hospital. I would like a debate with the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine on supports for the sheep sector, which is in very difficult circumstances. A wool feasibility report recommended the setting up of a wool council, but that has not happened. The reality is that we need further direct supports...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Business of Joint Committee (22 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: I welcome everyone to the meeting of the committee. Apologies have been received from Deputies Buckley and Ó Cathasaigh and Senator Pauline O'Reilly, who may be late. They are attending other committee meetings, but will attend at some stage. Before we start our business, I will read some formal notices and the Covid-19 code of conduct. All of those present in the committee room...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: I will just make a couple of comments in the time left. The prize is big. It is not by accident that our guests are here today. We felt the conversation would work with everyone together and one ask I have is that the conversation would continue with the Minister. I think they are the components. We have SOLAS, which looks after further education, a European-acknowledged project in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Autism: Autism Policy in Education: Discussion (Resumed) (22 Nov 2022)

Micheál Carrigy: Either Dr. Sweeney or Ms Early made a comment about a shortage of funding for certain sensory needs. The Minister announced enormous funding for all third level institutes earlier in the year. Would I be right in saying that funding is not sufficient?

Micheál Carrigy: With regard to the summer programme, which is more based on special schools and primary schools, do our witnesses have any views on a programme in further education? There are three months where autistic persons are not in school. Are any projects in place at the moment?
