- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: I thank Mr. Maguire and Mr. Ó Cinnéide for their presentations. Anything that can contribute to helping the sustainability of rural Ireland through job creation is pushing an open door as far as I am concerned. I have concerns around certain aspects of the current proposals and over the Galway Bay project because of its size. If the fears of scientific people and fishermen are...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: Perhaps Mr. Maguire might be able to give me a more detailed explanation. He has stated that it is for on-land finfish farms or whatever and that the technology is not there to do this in salt water but it can be done in fresh water.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: Why is that? One is talking about re-pumping and repeatedly recycling water. What is the reason it cannot work in sea water?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: It is probably due to the salt corrosion and so forth.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: I do not believe there is a problem with commitment as enough trials and work are being done on it. As for the type of equipment one uses, one can adapt and change it to meet those requirements.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: Hopefully, it probably will come about in the short term.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: What about the work that is being carried out to get the bays cleared?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: There appear to be fewer objections regarding shellfish farming and salmon compared with finfish and I understand there is far more of it. I know about the position in Dungarvan, extending back as far as Helvick Head, as people were working on it there approximately 20 years ago. The same is true in respect of Kenmare Bay, in large parts of County Donegal and all those areas where there was...

Martin Ferris: Would that mainly be coastal communities?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Discussion (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: Is there a difference between coastal communities and the general community?
- Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Facilities (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: 4 o’clock The HSE has been aware of this issue since 2011 and Joe Browne himself said there was no other project on the ground. He said that, since 2011, they knew they had to plan for staffing requirements and staffing has been on the agenda of the project group's monthly meetings since January 2012. How can it be that the HSE was aware of it, the staffing project was aware of...
- Topical Issue Debate: Hospital Facilities (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: I am raising the issue of the respiratory unit for cystic fibrosis patients in Cork University Hospital for several reasons, not least of which is the current crisis. I knew personally several people who passed away as a consequence of that terrible illness, including Billy Burke who passed away a number of years ago, Mary Hand from Dingle and Kieran Treacy who was a great friend of mine. I...

Martin Ferris: He sat there like a lapdog.
- Leaders' Questions (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: The Taoiseach has no empathy.
- Other Questions: Bovine Disease Controls (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: 9. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he will provide an update on the suspected case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, BSE, in County Louth and its probable consequences for the negligible risk status afforded to Ireland by the World Organisation for Animal Health. [26065/15]
- Other Questions: Bovine Disease Controls (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: The Minister answered most of this question when replying to Deputy Broughan's question but what are the consequences of a negligible risk status following the outbreak of BSE in County Louth? How will it affect our international exports, particularly with the opening of the markets in China?
- Other Questions: Bovine Disease Controls (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: It is very seldom any compliments are thrown around this House but let me say at the outset that the Minister and his Department have done a very good job in this instance and it is worth noting. Regarding the contamination and where it came from and so forth, my understanding is that the animal in question was the daughter of an import or an import itself from Germany.
- Other Questions: Bovine Disease Controls (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: Retrospective testing was done there as well. What about the calves from this cow? She was a six year old cow. I assume she had four calves. Were the calves male or female and did any of those calves find their way into the food chain?
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Horse Racing Industry Development (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: 2. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine if he is aware of the effort of the Irish Harness Racing Association to stage races at Dundalk race track, County Louth, the objection to this by the publicly funded Horse Racing Ireland and the obstacle this is to the development of the sport of harness racing; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26202/15]
- Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Horse Racing Industry Development (1 Jul 2015)
Martin Ferris: Is the Minister aware of the efforts of the Irish Harness Racing Association, IHRA, to stage races at Dundalk race track? Being an all-weather track, it is the only suitable race track in the State, to my knowledge. Is the Minister aware of the objection by the publicly funded organisation, Horse Racing Ireland, HRI? It is my understanding HRI has members on the board in Dundalk. I have...
