Order of Business (14 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: My first issue is a promised debate. The Government set up the Convention on the Constitution and promised that it would complete its remit within 12 months. I understand it did it in about 14 months. The motion passed by the Dáil setting it up said that the Government will provide in the Oireachtas a response to each recommendation by the convention within four months. The last...

Order of Business (14 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: It is not a speech. I am asking whether that Bill, which is very urgent, address those issues. One key area that has not been addressed to date is the issue of young people in schools with prefabs. Can I ask that an audit be carried out on educational facilities around the country?

Order of Business (14 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: It is not a separate issue.

Order of Business (14 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: The promised legislation does not address it. The Dáil was led to believe it would be addressed but it is not contained in the legislation.

Financial Resolution No. 2: Capital Allowances (13 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I find it strange. What the Taoiseach said has not fully allayed my fears. He talked about centres of excellence. I heard Deputy Naughten talk about Ireland West Airport. I have always wished our regional airports well. They should try to encourage as much business as possible. To avail of the tax incentive the Taoiseach is talking about here, the projects that would need to be built...

Financial Resolution No. 2: Capital Allowances (13 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I have problems with this proposal. In an era where we have been trying to get rid of tax reliefs and tax avoidance schemes, it seems strange we would encourage one of the most highly profitable sectors to avail of a tax incentive to locate in Ireland, in particular considering what has happened in the aviation services facilities sector in Ireland in recent years. In addition, we know of...

Financial Resolution No. 2: Capital Allowances (13 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: There are characters who will take a benefit from a tax relief that was originally set up to be beneficial to an industry. If it could be limited to the industry, we might then have some say. The problem is that many of these schemes are set up in good faith and are then abused by those who have made billions from our system of tax reliefs in the past. I have concerns about this.

[35485/15]

Written Answers — Department of Environment, Community and Local Government: Homelessness Strategy (13 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: 429. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government the steps required by the European Commission to allow the Irish Government declare the homeless crisis an emergency; if this declaration would speed up the public procurement process when building social housing, not just modular housing; if this declaration would allow the Government to fund the building of social...

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: An rud a dúirt mé ná nach bhfuil a fhios agam gó fóill. Má tá comóradh eagraithe acu, chuirfinn fáilte roimh gach éinne freastal orthu ar fad nó freastal ar a rogha comóradh. Sin mar ba chóir a mholadh. Ba chóir dúinn ar fad daoine a mholadh chun féachaint arís ar na hidéil agus ar an fhís a...

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: Tá a lán den mhéid atá le rá agam ráite agam cheana féin. Bhí mé ag súil go mbeadh Aire nó Aire Stáit anseo a léireodh go bhfuil tuisint aige nó aici ar an méid atá i gceist sa Bhille seo, seachas an Aire Stáit a tháinig anseo chun an cheist atá ardaithe agam inniu, agus le tamall de bhlianta...

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: The Minister of State accused me of being disingenuous in his contribution. However, his statement is a most disingenuous response to an attempt by a Deputy to put forward something positive. Moreover, as I stated earlier, his former leader, Deputy Quinn, sought to have two additional public holidays. I did not simply come into the Chamber today, a few months before the 2016 celebrations,...

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: These were addressed to me directly by the Minister of State.

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: These issues were addressed to me directly by the Minister of State and I simply am responding to them. The State-----

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I am stating that the State suspended its commemoration of 1916 for more than 30 years.

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: This meant, by that very action, that the State was politicising the ideals and commemorations of 1916. In my document, bhí sé i gceist agam lá saoire náisiúnta a chur sa tsiúil. Is ait liom go bhfuil an Stát ag cur ina choinne. Bhí sé i gceist agam chomh maith bord Lá na Poblachta a bhunú. Ba é sin an príomhrud a...

Public Holidays (Lá na Poblachta) Bill 2013: Second Stage [Private Members] (9 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I move: "That the Bill be now read a Second Time." Molaim An Bille um Laethanta Saoire Poiblí (Lá na Poblachta) 2013. Ba mhaith liom mo bhuíochas a ghabháil leo siúd ar fad a chuidigh liom an Bille seo a chur le chéile agus a smaoinigh an coincheap seo a bhogadh ar aghaidh go dtí an Bille atá os ár gcomhair inniu. Tharla sé seo thar...

Order of Business (8 Oct 2015)

Aengus Ó Snodaigh: I have a number of issues to raise. Each term, we get a copy of the legislative programme, which is published and circulated to everybody, giving an indication of what Bills will be published. For example, the current programme indicates that 34 pieces of legislation will be produced before Christmas. I wish the Government well in that regard. The rest of the programme is a wish list and...
