Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: Farm it out to whom?

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: Senator Feargal Quinn managed to produce seven or eight Bills and they are all constipated.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: I agree with my colleague, Senator Darragh O'Brien. While I exonerate the Leader, Occam's razor which forbids hypothetical discussion of what is non-existent comes into play. There is simply no Bill; therefore, providing for a debate is complete nonsense.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: It is a token of the Government's bad faith, not of the Leader of the House. The Government is not intent on introducing any real reform of the House. It will tinker with the university seats and leave it at that, which is unacceptable. I also extend words of sympathy to the family of Christine Buckley. I did not know the family, but I have met her daughter. Christine was a very...

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: Why should the Senator have to ask a question?

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: On a point of order, it is not necessary to ask a question. This is something that has grown up. Would the Cathaoirleach be kind enough to point to something in the Constitution or Standing Orders-----

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: It was not always the practice.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: The former Senator Joe O'Toole consistently made that point. I do not intend to accept that ruling, and it is not a good ruling.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: Hear, hear. We all agree with that.

Seanad: Order of Business (11 Mar 2014)

David Norris: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: This is not a funeral - it is a celebration. That is clear from what everyone has said. We are celebrating a colleague whom we held in high esteem and affection. It is great to see the extended O'Toole clan overwhelming the Visitors Gallery. Its members are great people. Martin J. used to be over there and I was very glad to serve with him, but on our side we had Joe O'Toole. They were...

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: I can remember Martin J., but I cannot remember Monsignor Horan. That says a bit about my priorities. Martin J. was steadfast in pushing for the airport. Unfortunately, we do not have much of that kind of imagination and that capacity to think big in this country now. We need people with vision and who can think very clearly and with a bit of imagination. I am an argumentative person....

Seanad: Death of Former Member: Expressions of Sympathy (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: I never actually succeeded in provoking Martin J. O'Toole. That is a record. I shall miss him, although not of course as keenly as his family. He remains a happy and affectionate memory as far as I am concerned.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: From where did the photograph come?

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: On a point of information, many people have asked about Ukraine. The Tánaiste will attend the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade this afternoon. People can come along.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: Members would be welcome to join us.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: I agree with the Cathaoirleach. To be fair-handed, as he always is, Ministers should not tell porkies in the House either.

Seanad: Order of Business (4 Mar 2014)

David Norris: I share the concerns expressed by colleagues with regard to the highly volatile and dangerous situation in Ukraine. There seems to be no leadership at all there. Situations of division are extremely dangerous. We should remember the position which obtained prior to the First World War and the fact that people walked right into that conflict. Lord Grey was in tears on the evening before...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2014)

David Norris: Can we have a discussion on the role of the Garda Commissioner and the position of the Garda? When a woman makes a serious complaint of sexual harassment and she is told that the last person who made a complaint is now washing cars in Navan, that is much worse than the time the late Brian Lenihan asked a garda whether he wanted a pint or a transfer.

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2014)

David Norris: There are grave questions about the Minister for Justice and Equality. He is an excellent reforming Minister but he has character flaws which have led him into serious errors of judgment. There are questions about him too, but the Commissioner must go first.
