Terry Leyden: The difference is, when we make a collective decision, we stick by it.

Seanad: Order of Business. (8 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: I am speaking about a specific technical situation. There will be other reviews of the Constitution later in the year possibly as regards this House and other issues that may arise. It will then be appropriate to discuss the rights of citizenship in a calm collected manner followed by a referendum later in the year.

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: In fairness, this side of the House takes grave exception to the comments made by Senator Ryan.

Seanad: Order of Business. (7 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader contact the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government concerning the building regulations Bill? The legislation has been at the drafting stage for some time and will contain approximately 55 sections. I wish to declare a vested interest in the Bill, concerning the registration of architects and quantity surveyors. At the moment, there is no legislation...

Seanad: Hospitals Building Programme. (6 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Callely, who has responsibility for older people, for attending the House. I also compliment him on his excellent work since becoming a Minister of State in this Government, following on the fine work of his predecessor, Dr. Tom Moffat, who was an excellent Minister of State. He and I worked together when I was...

Terry Leyden: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader allocate time after the Easter recess to consider penal reform in light of the announcement by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell, about providing 1,000 prison places in Dublin, 800 on Spike Island and 150 new places in Castlerea, County Roscommon? Currently, approximately 250 people are in prison for the non-payment of debts, which is not the...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (1 Apr 2004)

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (1 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: Unfortunately, they are not relevant. They wish they were more relevant at the moment. They have been very good on their own rip-off campaign.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (1 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: It is fine for Carmel Foley to go on "Morning Ireland" to explain the good work of her organisation, but she is a toothless tiger as she can do nothing about the issue. What is the point in exposing this rip-off and naming and shaming people when she cannot impose a maximum price order on a pint? Prices ranged from €4.95 to €3.25.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed). (1 Apr 2004)

Terry Leyden: The question is whether we should introduce a maximum price order and what action should be taken in regard to soaring prices. The exploitation of customers which took place during the rugby international is quite evident. I ask the Leader to provide an opportunity for the Government to ensure the matter gets a further airing in this House. This House has provided more opportunities for...

Seanad: Smoking Ban: Motion (31 Mar 2004)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Senator to speak to the motion.
