Heritage Bill 2016 [Seanad]: Second Stage (Resumed) (8 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: I thank Deputy Fitzmaurice for facilitating me. I will begin by refuting some of the comments made by Deputy Catherine Martin. First, I congratulate her on her election tonight as chairperson of the new women's caucus in Leinster House. However, I refute her accusations that I or the Minister, two rural Deputies from the constituency of Cavan-Monaghan, care any less about the biodiversity...

Other Questions: Brexit Issues (8 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: On his recent visit to Cavan the Minister had the privilege of taking a guided tour around McCarren's where, as he is well aware, there has been significant investment. He is also aware that a third dryer was opened recently in Lakeland Dairies. The mushroom industry in the constituency has been badly affected since the announcement of Brexit, following which the Border counties will be at...

Other Questions: Brexit Issues (8 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: I agree with the Minister. The continuation of an invisible border for Border counties such as Cavan and Monaghan must be of the utmost importance for the Minister and the Government in negotiations. The Minister does not need me to tell him that in 2015 exports of agricultural products from Ireland to the North of Ireland were worth more than €750 million. Imports from Northern...

Other Questions: Brexit Issues (8 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: 43. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the steps he is taking to protect farmers in Border counties from a hard Brexit; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [46935/17]

Other Questions: Brexit Issues (8 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: What steps is the Minister taking to protect farmers in the Border counties, such as Cavan and Monaghan, from a hard Brexit? Will he make a statement on the matter?

Written Answers — Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Ministerial Meetings (8 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: 64. To ask the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the discussions he has had with the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government regarding exceptional cases being examined for slurry spreading; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [46934/17]

Other Questions: State Pensions (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: 66. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection her plans to reinstate the State transition pension; her further plans to prevent persons forced to retire at 65 years of age having to apply for jobseeker's for one year until they reach the State pensionable age of 66; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [46590/17]

Other Questions: State Pensions (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: I appreciate what the Minister is saying. My experience is that more people are being asked to retire at 65 who do not want to, who feel they have a lot more to give and who are quite willing and anxious to keep working. There are many fit, able, capable and young 65 year olds out there who are quite anxious to keep working and who find it rather humiliating to have to retire and then go on...

Other Questions: State Pensions (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: People already do it in the private sector.

Other Questions: State Pension (Contributory) (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: 58. To ask the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection her plans to re-examine the situation where women who were in the workforce and left in earlier years for family duties are not in a position to receive the full State contributory pension when they reach retirement age; and her further plans to address this situation. [46645/17]

Other Questions: State Pension (Contributory) (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: I heard the Minister speak about this issue already with my colleague, Deputy Willie O'Dea, but I ask her to outline her plans to re-examine how people, women in particular, are affected by the anomaly within the State pensions system.

Other Questions: State Pension (Contributory) (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: I welcome the Minister's response. I note how she states the issue also affects men. Of course, the irony is that, no more than in the case of the Minister, 100% of the complaints I have received in my clinic have been from women and we can all appreciate their frustration. They reach that point in their life where they think they will receive the full State pension and then realise,...

Order of Business (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: The programme for Government states very clearly that a review is to be done on the ambulance service. This man lost his life.

Order of Business (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: The programme for Government includes a clear commitment to review the ambulance service and deliver safe pre-hospital care. On 8 July last, a married man in his 40s and the father of two young children suffered a cardiac arrest in Ballybay, County Monaghan. He was forced to wait more than one hour for an ambulance. A doctor on call arrived 90 minutes after the emergency call was made....

Order of Business (7 Nov 2017)

Niamh Smyth: Tragically, the young man in question lost his life before an ambulance arrived. 3 o’clock Will the Taoiseach meet this family and insist on a full investigation as to why it took over an hour for an ambulance to get to this man, who lost his life? This is a matter of life or death.
