Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: The entire House is happy and, despite what we heard on the last day we met, is glad to note Senator Norris's happiness regarding the meeting with the academics. It is good to hear from him that he is happy and content about it. That is good and represents progress.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I was the Chief Whip. It was I who decided it.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: No. I decided that rather than have persons speaking with different ideas, which, by the way, we all have-----

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: We are all respectful democrats in this House.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I wanted to refer to the contribution of my good friend and colleague, Senator Darragh O'Brien. I thought his endeavours to appear overexcited were rather pained or strained. Perhaps he has not had the practice that some of his other colleagues behind him have had at the Abbey school of acting. Nevertheless, he and the House should be assured-----

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: -----that the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste are ad idem on some of the matters to which he referred. As I have often preached in this House, and in regard to Senator Norris' excitement on the other issue, let us be calm and, in Senator Darragh O'Brien's instance, await Cabinet discussion and decision because nothing has changed.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I am sure the Leader will agree with me that there are signs of confidence slowly creeping back in, especially in respect of house prices, to which Senator Bacik referred. I accept the increase has been tiny and marginal and that we would want to wait another two periods at least. The point is that we should be calm and measured and should not be getting overexcited needlessly.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome yesterday's announcement by the Minister for Justice and Equality on the publication of the heads of the Criminal Justice (Corruption) Bill. It is a novel and worthwhile idea to lay out the Bill's general scheme before detailed drafting of the legislation. It will go to the justice committee and other interested parties, including I hope this House. The legislation takes on board...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: I am amused at Senator Darragh O'Brien seeking instant answers on the Ryanair bid for Aer Lingus. It has not yet been discussed by Cabinet and it involves serious matters of national policy and competition that must be examined in great detail. The European Commission ruled out a previous attempt by Ryanair to acquire Aer Lingus. We had better wait a little. Today's amendment to the Order...

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: The Senators know all about it and are not seeking it nowadays.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: It is always good to hear Senator O'Brien's interesting take on the Order of Business. I note from his comments this morning that Fianna Fáil is not interested in an early general election and that he confirms the party's continuing commitment to stability and a steady hand on the tiller, which thankfully this Government is providing.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: In that respect, we welcome the IMF's sixth review of our funding programme with Europe, following which the tranche of €1.4 billion is being released. The IMF welcomed our financial sector reforms. It is good to know that there is an agreement between the Opposition and the Government on this issue. We all know how people in this business play for space.

Seanad: Order of Business (14 Jun 2012)

Paul Coghlan: Senator O'Brien may well say that, but I could not possibly comment. We will see how these matters play out over time.
