- Committee on Children and Equality: Priority Issues Facing the Department: Minister for Children, Disability and Equality (12 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: I thank the Minister and her Department team. I look forward to working with her. Core funding is working for many parents and providers but the nature of our work is to focus on those it is not working for. While I know it was before the Minister's time and a different Minister was in charge, when the adjustments were brought in, was the Department fully aware of the impact this was going...
- Committee on Children and Equality: Priority Issues Facing the Department: Minister for Children, Disability and Equality (12 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: We are seeing massive jumps in childcare funding and that is great. We communicated to parents that they would be getting on average a 25% uplift. I am looking for information from the Department as to whether that was delivered. Where did the subsidies bring us? I am aware of a family who have had to leave their childcare place. They could not afford it because of the changes. It is an...
- Committee on Children and Equality: Priority Issues Facing the Department: Minister for Children, Disability and Equality (12 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: I tabled a parliamentary question about the number of applications for the building blocks programme. There were 78 applications in total, 29 of which were deemed unsuccessful or ineligible. This is quite a high number - about 40%. Is there an appeals process and if so, will it utilise the money that has not been allocated? Obviously, childcare providers are very interested in this scheme...
- Committee on Children and Equality: Priority Issues Facing the Department: Minister for Children, Disability and Equality (12 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: It is just that a rate of 40% of people being unsuccessful is very high.

- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: The programme for Government commits to a policy framework for drones to guide high-level strategic planning and development, supporting innovation and addressing other concerns. While that is necessary, it omits a fundamental issue: the impact of commercial drone operations on local communities. Some say there are no regulations at all, which is not true, but it is air and ground...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: Yes, and more coming - up to a million in a year.
- Committee on Transport: Driving Test and NCT Delays: RSA (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: Deputy Crowe and I will be on the opposite sides of the same debate again today. In 2023, 14 unaccompanied learner drivers were involved in collisions. As I think one fatality is one too many I will base my remarks on driver safety and encouraging good behaviour on roads. I would like an update on the loophole that exists where learner drivers can apply for a test, not take one but...
- Committee on Transport: Driving Test and NCT Delays: RSA (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: We are dealing with a spike in waiting times at the moment.
- Committee on Transport: Driving Test and NCT Delays: RSA (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: There was also a spike in waiting times a couple of years ago, after Covid. However, this commitment was made 11 years ago so that rationale given does not stack up. A couple of years ago, the then Minister of State, Deputy Chambers, gave a commitment that the number of people on their third permits would be reduced to 10% by 2024. Actions were taken by the then Minister, Eamon Ryan, too....
- Committee on Transport: Driving Test and NCT Delays: RSA (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: I thank Mr. Walsh for the update. That action is taking place now but it has taken far too long for us to get here. To be clear, is legislation required to make this happen?
- Committee on Transport: Driving Test and NCT Delays: RSA (11 Jun 2025)
Emer Currie: Legislation is required.
