Seanad: Citizens' Assemblies: Motion (23 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: It falls to me to welcome the Minister of State to the House and thank him for bringing forward this motion, which is in line with a commitment made in the programme for Government. It follows from a successful approach to dealing with matters that have been sensitive and often difficult to grapple with at a political level for a variety of reasons. I always had concerns about citizens'...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I might get some clarity from the Cathaoirleach before I make the point I wish to raise. Our colleague raised the issue of the unrest in Canada and requested he write to the Canadian ambassador. Before he does that, we should have a full debate in the House and let all sides of that issue be discussed. My reading of what is going on in Canada is that it is really an extension of Trumpism,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: It is to be expected.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I will probably not need that much time because my colleagues from the Clare and mid-west region have covered many of the issues. I thank our guests for their presentation and their ongoing work, which is much appreciated. The concept of the Shannon Airport spur has been around for a considerable period. In my view, the strength of that offering will be the speed at which a train can get...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: One of the biggest things to recognise is that Dublin Airport is reaching capacity. I know there is an additional runway but that is not going to meet demand as we head towards 2040 and 2050. People who understand the infrastructure of Dublin Airport know it is reaching a point beyond which it cannot go. There is a lot of latent capacity at Shannon Airport. There was an initiative by a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: Many people would be very happy with that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: So Mr. Meade is working on the principle of having hydrogen on the rail network?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: On the western rail corridor, which others have mentioned, I have been in contact with Mr. Meade and his predecessors about the opening of the station at Crusheen. Could he talk to us about the current position on the further development of the western rail corridor? Does he envisage potential in that regard?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: My final point is very local. There is a trespass issue at Sixmilebridge station. Is there anything Mr. Meade might want to, or can, say to us about that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: It is an issue for commuters. Mr. Meade is familiar with it. Others and I regularly hear concerns about it. There are wider legal issues but it needs to be-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Iarnród Éireann (17 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: And efforts are being made to solve it?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: The Leader may be aware that the week commencing 28 February to 6 March is to be Eating Disorder Week. I raised this issue previously in the House, and I know that it is one the Leader is very familiar with. Notwithstanding that the Government set aside significant amounts of money last year and this year, there is a considerable delay in rolling out appropriate services. I believe there...

Seanad: Electricity Costs (Domestic Electricity Accounts) Emergency Measures Bill 2022: Second Stage (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: I welcome the Minister. Like many others, I welcome the Government intervention in assisting people with the significant cost-of-living increase, particularly concentrated in the energy sector. The €200 benefit payment and €125 lump sum payment on the fuel allowance will not solve all the losses people for sure, particularly those on low pay and in receipt of social welfare,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: That is okay. I will keep it very brief. I thank Mr. Cullen for his presence here and thank him on behalf of his organisation and the work it does for his ongoing engagement with the political process. He is probably one of the most active in terms of his engagement with this committee and other Members around matters that are of serious concern, not just to his members, but to the wider...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: We are going back to -----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: That was my next question. Is there a documented history of information being provided to the Irish Aviation Authority, IAA? They need not get into it in detail. Maybe they can provide it to the committee afterwards. Is there evidence that shows there has been ongoing communication with the IAA over a period of time? Is it fair to say that nothing happened until an accident occurred, all...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: That brings me to the next point. That sets a context for the legislation, which we are now being asked to rubber-stamp or accept, coming from Government which ultimately is a culmination of discussions that have gone on, principally within the Department of Transport, I would have thought, in consultation with the IAA. They are effectively saying to us as legislators that we do not really...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: It is not so much the maps for me now. That sets a context where the IAA - I do not want to apportion blame - certainly did not seem to take cognisance of the errors that existed on maps up to a point. That is probably for somewhere else to be adjudicated on, but for us to take as a context in which we address the points that are being raised by the pilots.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: Not at all, but it has been highlighted where the charts were prior to a particular event and how they improved afterwards. Based on what has been raised with us, and particularly with what Mr. Brereton has talked about, we need to bring the aviation authority and the Department back in to discuss that peer support issue. I am taken by the evidence that was given today. We all accept that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (15 Feb 2022)

Timmy Dooley: That is striking.
