Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Regulation of Sale and Supply of Pets and Animal Welfare: Discussion (1 Jun 2021)

Matt Carthy: I will return to the point Deputy Paul Donnelly was raising. It is my experience on this committee that when we deal with any issue that crosses multiple Departments, problems and complications arise, which simply would not happen if there was a very clear demarcation of responsibility. We are dealing with a scenario where obviously the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Regulation of Sale and Supply of Pets and Animal Welfare: Discussion (1 Jun 2021)

Matt Carthy: Yes, on foot of this the committee should write to the Department to get clarification. If there is any basis for them at all, they are very concerning figures. I thank our guests for being here today. I would also like some clarification following on from the opening statement. With regard to the costs to the Exchequer and the taxpayer, it would be useful if we were to delve a little...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Regulation of Sale and Supply of Pets and Animal Welfare: Discussion (1 Jun 2021)

Matt Carthy: The opening statement said millions of euro had been lost to the taxpayer for horses omitted from the food chain, for late registration alone, as thousands of horses are stamped out of the food chain for this reason and not for any medical treatment. My question looks for clarification as to how the taxpayer ends up losing millions of euro through that process.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forestry Issues: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (27 May 2021)

Matt Carthy: I concur that it is difficult to take at face value commitments that we receive from the Department about corners being turned. We have turned so many corners as regards forestry that we are back where we started. I thank the representatives from the Department for participating in this meeting. As we heard from the Minister's contribution in the Dáil last week and from today's...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forestry Issues: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (27 May 2021)

Matt Carthy: Apologies. That only 2,488 ha were planted last year must ring alarm bells. This year, licences were awarded in respect of 2,226 ha, but only 948 ha have been planted so far. Of those, could we be given the breakdown between Coillte and private operators? How much of that area relates to new entrants to afforestation? If the figure is not available now, could it be found? It will set...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Forestry Issues: Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (27 May 2021)
