Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: General Scheme of Assisted Human Reproduction Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (28 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: It is important that we would encourage the Department of Health to engage with the witnesses because this is a complex area and they are the people who are working at the coalface who know the complications. To go back to my own profession, when we were dealing with the legislation to regulate solicitors the Law Society had ongoing communication with the Department of Justice and Equality...

Seanad: Order of Business (27 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I wish to raise an issue referred to in an article on the front page of today's edition of the Irish Examiner, which reported on the measles outbreak in Limerick. It identifies 18 out of the 20 people affected as having not been vaccinated. It highlights the importance of vaccination in that whole area. The uptake of measles vaccination over recent years has decreased. We need to reach a...

Seanad: Order of Business (22 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: Senator Paul Gavan spoke against tax cuts, but one of the problems in the recruitment of junior doctors to the health service is that they pay tax at the higher rate on earnings above €34,550. Everyone wants more doctors and nurses, but more and more are leaving the country because, under the tax regime, they pay tax at the higher rate on too low a salary. It is time people made up...

Seanad: Flooding: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I thank the Minister of State for the coming to the House to deal with this important issue. I thank him and all the staff in his Department for the work they are doing. It is always a complex issue when dealing with trying to alleviate flooding. There are many of parties involved from landowners to property owners to local authorities and other authorities. We need to approach this issue...

Seanad: Versatis Medicated Plasters: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I propose that I take five minutes and Senator Mulherin takes the remaining three minutes.

Seanad: Versatis Medicated Plasters: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. The withdrawal of Versatis is a very serious issue. It is important that everyone realises that the medication has not been withdrawn from the drugs refund scheme and there is now a different mechanism for dealing with same. The way this matter has been approached was probably not the correct way to do so. People had become reliant on Versatis...

Seanad: Versatis Medicated Plasters: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I am only referring to one part of that city. It seems that once anti-depressants are prescribed one must always take them. That is not what medicine is about. It is about ensuring a person's health can improve and that he or she can be weaned off medication over time. The debate has started but we must find ways to improve the health system overall.

Seanad: Versatis Medicated Plasters: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: This has been clearly set out by the expert working in the health service who is the qualified person to deal with the supervision of medicines. That is clearly on the medical records.

Seanad: Versatis Medicated Plasters: Statements (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: It is clearly set out.

Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I thank the Minister for dealing with this matter and my colleague, Senator Martin Conway, for bringing forward the motion. I also commend Senators Dolan and Kelleher for coming forward with their views on this matter and all of those who have contributed to the debate. I want to focus on one matter, namely local authorities and the role of disability officers. I have raised this issue on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I thank the witnesses for their comprehensive presentations. Gynaecological services in Cork were touched on. Is there any update on that waiting list, as 40% of all the people waiting for those services are on the Cork waiting list. Is there any update on the current status of the waiting times for those services in Cork and the numbers on the waiting list? The witnesses might provide...

Colm Burke: We want to create a number of new places in addition to replacing the people who are retiring. Will we have a sufficient number of people to meet the target?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Review of National Maternity Strategy 2016-2026: Discussion (21 Feb 2018)

Colm Burke: I want to ask Mr. McGrane about the provision of support for staff where there is an adverse event. I outlined an incident where staff were required to attend an inquest without support of any description prior to doing so.
