Six weeks later I am still waiting for an update on the...

Leaders' Questions (13 Apr 2017)

Robert Troy: The Government is trying to manage many serious challenges on many fronts, some with little success and others with none. Housing remains a national crisis which is worsening by the day rather than improving. For the past 22 days, a bus strike has impeded people across the country and has had a detrimental impact on local and regional economies. A report yesterday confirmed that businesses...

Leaders' Questions (13 Apr 2017)

Robert Troy: It is typical of the Government that the Tánaiste comes into the House and tries to take credit for every positive event over the past number of years. Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty - Drink Driving) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Apr 2017)

Robert Troy: I welcome the witnesses and thank them for engaging with the committee on the report and the proposed legislation. Am I correct that of the 8,000 people arrested and convicted on suspicion of drink driving in 2015-2016, in 2015, 501 people received fixed penalty notices and this subsequently rose to 617 in 2016?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty - Drink Driving) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Apr 2017)

Robert Troy: In other words, in 2015 and 2016, 7,500 and 7,400 people, respectively, were put off the road for drink driving, which means the number of people disqualified from driving was greater than the number of people who received a fixed penalty notice and a €250 fine.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty - Drink Driving) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Apr 2017)

Robert Troy: The point I am making is that automatic disqualification from driving is not the panacea it is displayed to be because if it were the number of people losing their licence would not be greater than the number of people receiving a fixed penalty notice and €250 fine.

From Mr. Cribben's experience of working in the industry, what is the reason for this change in the downward trend among...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: General Scheme of Road Traffic (Fixed Penalty - Drink Driving) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (12 Apr 2017)

Robert Troy: We need to work together to achieve the ultimate goal of reducing the incidence of drink driving. Regardless of what we do we will never eliminate road accidents. Unfortunately, that is not a possibility but we can bring forward legislation to help to reduce and minimise accidents.
