Dara Calleary: On the question of cross-Border and cross-Europe competition, there was a feeling the old system made us uncompetitive and was being used in particular by companies the other side of the Border or across Europe. There was a sense that they were using lower wage rates and that there was no enforcement; therefore, it brings in the issue of workplace relations also.

Dara Calleary: We should acknowledge the work done by the Labour Relations Commission. It transformed industrial relations in this country and has been used as a model throughout the world. I pay tribute to all who served on it, as it is being kicked out of action.

Dara Calleary: I see where the Minister is coming from, but the principles of employment law and respect should also be understood in company law. That is where the gap lies. Often, company law does not respect the fact that people work in companies.

Dara Calleary: I want to give notice of an amendment for Report Stage. I am not sure whether I gave it earlier. In section 19, there should be a statement in every workplace of the statutory entitlements of staff. Under the Bill, every employee should have access to that statement.
