- Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2018)
Colm Burke: I am making the point that a lot of good progress as been made on that issue.
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2018)
Colm Burke: It is important that we now deal with the issues that have arisen, and deal with them in a very transparent and upfront manner. That is what our debate should be about.
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 May 2018)
Colm Burke: I would like to make that point.
- Seanad: Defence Forces: Statements (1 May 2018)
Colm Burke: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. I will not take eight minutes because the Minister of State has set out very comprehensively the work the Defence Forces have done and that they need to carry out in the coming years. There is a challenge on investment. On the good side we have a flow into the economy, which means we can invest in this vital service. The Army, Naval Service...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee
Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion (25 Apr 2018) Colm Burke: I thank the witnesses for their very comprehensive presentations. I know some of them face a difficult task in dealing with this issue. Some of the issues I wished to raise have been raised already so I will be brief. According to the presentation, since 1993 there are about 400 children with developmental delay and about 100 with physical malformation. Do we have accurate figures,...

Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion (25 Apr 2018) Colm Burke: Can we set up a process for dealing with this? The problem seems to be that there is no process for dealing with it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee
Foetal Anti-Convulsant Syndrome: Discussion (25 Apr 2018) Colm Burke: Chairman, I asked a specific question about the systems in place with regard to medications that are available for a long period of time and I am not clear if it was answered.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Chiropractic Association of Ireland (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: I thank the delegates for their very comprehensive presentation on the work they are doing. With regard to the services currently being provided, the delegates said some chiropractors use their own X-ray equipment and others make referrals. Could I get clarification on medical indemnity insurance? Does each practising chiropractor have professional indemnity insurance? In particular, do...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: I thank the witnesses for their presentations and for the work they do. Sometimes we have medical practitioners before the committee and we do not acknowledge their work and the contribution they make to our healthcare sector. It is important that we do so. We heard from the representatives of the Chiropractic Association of Ireland earlier this morning. One of my questions related to...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: What is the problem with chiropractors having the power to refer on for radiology or extra services? The radiologists are the experts who will decide whether or not it is appropriate that there be an X-ray. What is the concern in terms of chiropractors having that power and that being removed from them under the proposed regulation?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: No, referred specifically for an X-ray to a radiologist, who is the expert and can decide whether or not it is appropriate. Under the proposed system, the chiropractor would have to send the person back to the GP, who would then have to refer on to the radiologist. What is the problem with a person who has an expertise in a particular area deciding it appropriate that before he or she...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: I acknowledge that. However, some radiologists work in a private capacity.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: Yes, but the proposal will remove that power from them. A chiropractor will have to apologise and send the patient back to his or her GP, who will then refer the patient for an X-ray.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: Moving away from the area of radiology, I wish to raise the practice of people now providing scanning services, which is totally unregulated. I recently heard of a person who had a scan on a Saturday and was advised that the baby she was carrying had died but there was no mechanism in place to refer her on to a medical practitioner. A mother was left in limbo over a weekend to deal with...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM: Faculty of Radiologists (25 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: I accept that but I compare that situation with that of chiropractors who provide a service and are prepared to refer on to specialists who provide a very comprehensive service. We seem to be excluding people who are providing a service and regulation and who have insurance and I am concerned by that.
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: I agree with my colleague, Senator Kieran O'Donnell, regarding the motorway from Cork to Limerick. It is an important development that the team has now been appointed to progress the project. We must fast-track it; it should not drag on for four or five years before construction starts. We should set clear timelines and aim to meet them. I also agree with the Senator that it would be a...
- Seanad: Order of Business (24 Apr 2018)
Colm Burke: Senator Craughwell is dead right. This project is about developing the entire region, and it is important that the emphasis be on the growth of Cork and Munster and moving away from the major growth centre of the past 25 or 30 years, namely, Dublin, so that we can plan properly and ensure we have the necessary infrastructure. I wish to raise another matter regarding the British media's...
