Jack Chambers: Can Professor Lewis give examples about the ages?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Right to Die with Dignity: Discussion (22 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: There is obviously parental involvement. Is there a conflict between what some have characterised as a right to die and a duty to die, where parental or familial involvement, whether at a young or old age? What is Professor Lewis's ethical view on that?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Right to Die with Dignity: Discussion (22 Nov 2017)

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Right to Die with Dignity: Discussion (22 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: In the previous session it was mentioned that doctors could and should be excluded. Is Professor Lewis saying there is no regime where doctors are excluded?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: Right to Die with Dignity: Discussion (22 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: That is right. The issue was discussed during the previous session. I will go back to what the disability groups have said in Northern Ireland. Earlier I quoted Disability Action and I will do so again: Disability Action is opposed to the legalisation of assisted suicide. Whilst we believe that people should have a right to control in their lives, we believe that changing the law to...
- Select Committee on Justice and Equality: Estimates for Public Services 2017
Vote 24 - Justice and Equality (Revised) (22 Nov 2017) Jack Chambers: I thank the Minister for attending. What was the rationale for the transfer? Surely the oversight function of the Charities Regulatory Authority is better placed in the Department of Justice and Equality. I find it hard to understand the logic apart from giving a Minister who has little funding in his own Department something to do.

[48496/17]
- Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017: Second Stage (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: I am. The other speakers will be here shortly. Fianna Fáil supports the Criminal Justice (Corruption Offences) Bill 2017. It is important that the House moves collectively to strengthen anti-white-collar crime through the measures contained in the Bill. The current legislation governing corruption is too unwieldy and because of recent court cases it is prudent to strengthen the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: I thank the witnesses for their presentations. To follow up on a point made by Deputy Ó Laoghaire, Digital Rights Ireland last week said that the scheme as presented will inevitably end up in the courts and be appealed. Do the witnesses wish to reiterate that they feel the scheme as presented, if enacted, would not be permissible according to EU law?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: If we create a two-tiered approach incorporating a strict necessity threshold, would the witnesses prefer, as Deputy Daly seems to wish, that everyone would have a high threshold regardless of their profession, background or potential category or do they feel there should be a separate threshold for journalists as proposed by Mr. Justice Murray? Which approach would the witness prefer to see?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: Across the board. Would Ms Farries like there to be a higher threshold than that for everybody in order that everyone receive the specific or special protection or should there be a split categorisation as Mr. Dooley stated?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: Would Ms Farries prefer to have the model proposed by Deputy Daly whereby there would be a special protection for every citizen to match the special protection for journalists or would she have split protection?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: In terms of the Bill and the current architecture around the District Court and the referee to the Circuit Court and the High Court providing a supervisory role, the Department last week said it would like there to be a pooled skill level at District Court level but Ms Farries feels that would be unworkable and would not give adequate protection to citizens.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: Would not be appropriate.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality: General Scheme of the Communications (Retention of Data) Bill 2017: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Nov 2017)
Jack Chambers: I fully agree that there must be a higher threshold in terms of the courts architecture. A point mentioned by Deputy Ó Laoghaire is that if there were to be a split protection, might it be possible for someone, possibly a law enforcement agency, to try to explore or discover a source's communications with a journalist as a means to reach the journalist? Has that been explored in any...
