Seanad: Tax Code: Motion. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: I wish to make one further point while the officials are present. All old age pensions should be exempt from income tax and the free fuel allowance should be doubled, given that a tank full of oil of costs €530 and tax on oil is high. We are doing a great deal of lobbying in this regard. I ask the Leas-Chathaoirleach to allow me to make another point.

Seanad: Tax Code: Motion. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: Free fuel should be given all year round because it is needed throughout the year. I hope the officials will listen.

Seanad: Tax Code: Motion. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister of State at the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government, Deputy Batt O'Keeffe, who replaces the Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Deputy Parlon. It was great to have the new Minister for Finance, Deputy Cowen, in the House. The Fianna Fáil Party is most fortunate to have one great Minister for Finance succeed another, Deputy McCreevy....

Seanad: Tax Code: Motion. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: The details outlined in the speech are excellent. The facts speak louder than words. Government Senators find it difficult to criticise the Opposition because it has been such a long time since it was in power.

Seanad: Tax Code: Motion. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: The exemption of VAT on children's clothes and footwear reminds me of the time former Taoiseach, Garret FitzGerald, attempted to impose VAT on these items. Even former Deputy Jim Kemmy could not live with it and begged him not to do it.

Terry Leyden: What is the Fine Gael Party doing about it?

Seanad: Competitiveness and Consumer Protection Policy: Statements. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: Let us argue about prices here. The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism said the other day that we are killing ourselves off by talking ourselves out of business. The label "rip-off Ireland" is damaging the Irish economy. If Senator Cummins wants to argue politics, he should argue it within the State.

Seanad: Competitiveness and Consumer Protection Policy: Statements. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: He should not try to damage the Irish economy by adopting the irresponsible approach Fine Gael is taking at the moment. If that party ever has the misfortune to get into Government, I do not doubt that it will take down the website as quickly as possible.

Seanad: Competitiveness and Consumer Protection Policy: Statements. (10 Nov 2004)

Terry Leyden: A Fine Gael Government has never contributed to bringing down prices. It has raised prices at every opportunity. Its Members are the last people who should be talking about current prices.
