Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (Resumed) (20 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Is there a move towards acknowledging the surrogate mother on the birth certificate? Is there any talk about acknowledging the way the child came into the world on a new type of birth certificate?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Every time I enter this conversation I get confused, so forgive me. There is an endless range of different scenarios. Each surrogacy scenario is completely different. It may involve same-sex couples, those with a genetic link or without such a link etc. Dr. Mulligan mentioned that the surrogate should have those legal rights and I will follow up on what the Chair asked. Should the rights...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Undertaking this means that people are entering into a different tier, or level, of parenthood. A genetic link is clear, where it is present. I do not want to pit a genetic mother against a non-genetic mother, but in situations where there is a genetic link, however, have there been cases in other countries where such a genetic link has been regarded as more matter of fact and where the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: The legislation we are talking about in this context clearly refers to "birth mother" and "mother". In the Birth Information and Tracing Bill 2022 going through the Houses now, we have taken out the definition concerning "birth mother", which has given rise to many questions. Will doing that have an effect in Irish law? I refer to where the term "birth mother" is removed in one scenario,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I thank Dr. Mulligan for her answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I will probably have more questions when I get home and digest some of this. I apologise for that. I thank Dr. Mulligan very much. It is good to thrash out some of this information because we do have to legislate for the reality and whatever issues people have, the reality is that children and families are living in an unsound legal framework. We must make sure we deal with that. Whether...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: This morning, the Minister for Rural and Community Development launched the 2022 Tidy Towns competition and I wish all the Tidy Towns committees the very best of luck. I congratulate them on all their tireless work every week to make our towns and villages and byroads and high roads aesthetically better. They foster such community spirit and greatly improve our communities. Nevertheless, I...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome our guests. It is lovely to see them all in attendance. I was taken aback by what Mr. Sinnott quoted a departmental official as saying about us having to live in the real world. That official, I am afraid, is not living in the real world and needs to read up on his brief, whoever he was. It is disappointing to hear of that attitude among departmental officials. I was...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Given out guests' expertise, I was asking whether there is a problem in regard to that grey area. I do not have a problem but I was wondering whether there is a general one.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Media reports have suggested there was confusion whereby personal assistants have not been allowed to attend political meetings, following an incident a couple of years ago. I am asking for Ms Browne's expert opinion. Given PA service has not been legislated for, I considered it a grey area.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I fully agree. My point was that there have been media reports suggesting a PA was not allowed to attend a meeting, and I wanted to hear our guests' views on that. Such a scenario is outrageous because it is the disabled person who attends the meeting, not the PA.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Truth and Justice Movement (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome Mr. Monaghan, Mr. McCord and Ms McIlvenny. First, I am sorry that they are forced to come here to fight for the rights of their loved ones and for decades being the voice of the loved ones they have lost. The state structures have failed to give them justice and the truth of all that happened and to acknowledge the wrong that was done. I apologise for being late but I was in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Truth and Justice Movement (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Absolutely.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Truth and Justice Movement (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: Absolutely.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Truth and Justice Movement (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: It is powerful to listen to witnesses because it just demonstrates again that the legacy of the hurt and trauma carries on. Ms McIlvenny illustrated well how she wants those answers and not to bring this into future generations who are remembering their loved ones 50 years hence and not having answers. Justice cannot be dismissed because it is difficult. The truth is difficult.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Engagement with Truth and Justice Movement (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I reiterate what Senator Currie was saying and I support that 100%. I want to read something out; I will not be long. Innocent civilians have been executed with their arms tied behind their backs. There have been horrific accounts of rape, torture and brutalisation by the powerful of ordinary vulnerable citizens in their war-torn country. These are crimes against the Ukrainian people...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I thank all the witnesses very much. It is a great day to be starting on this important topic, to be getting stuck in and to be making sure we have a good report at the end of our three months of deliberation. I am reading into this topic and I am learning every day about it. I will start with the contribution of Ms O'Keeffe, who mentioned the Verona principles and the expert group of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome Professor O'Mahony and thank him for his attendance. It is good that we are at this point. Coming from the session we had earlier, I was confused - maybe that is the wrong word - or disheartened that many responses were to the effect that it was very difficult and there is hesitancy because people have struggled to legislate for this so far. However, the fact, as has often been...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Surrogacy in Ireland and in Irish and International Law: Discussion (7 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I have no further questions. I thank Professor O'Mahony. We have a lot of work to do and that was highlighted more than ever by the contributions of the representatives of the Departments in our previous session. We will have more questions for Professor O'Mahony as the committee moves on because there will be many things we need to ensure we respond to adequately. I thank him for his time.

Seanad: Defence (Restriction on Use of Certain Titles) Bill 2021: Second Stage (6 Apr 2022)

Erin McGreehan: I welcome the Minister to the House. I congratulate my colleague, Senator Malcolm Byrne, on bringing forward this Bill. It is long overdue. When one considers the history of this country and the men and women who wore this uniform, it is a Bill of respect. It is about standing up for democracy, being proud of our soldiers and institutions and standing tall alongside our Army and...
