Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation: Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (1 Apr 2014)

Caít Keane: I am just stating the facts.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation: Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (1 Apr 2014)

Caít Keane: Never.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Electricity Generation: Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (1 Apr 2014)

Caít Keane: In deference to the Minister I will be brief because we had a good debate in the Seanad on this subject. We have to work with what we have - we have wind - but we must use it in the best way possible. New methods are coming on stream every day. It is now possible to put a wind facility 1,000 ft. above the earth. This is being deployed in Alaska. It tethered by a string rather than a pole...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: I wish to join with my colleagues in conveying our sympathy to the McFadden family. I got to know Nicky McFadden in 2011, although many other Senators had the privilege of knowing her long before I did. She was one of the nicest people I have met in politics. She had a lovely way with her. I was walking along the corridor one day when she and Deputy Marcella Corcoran Kennedy asked me to...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: It is true for our party, Fine Gael. As regards what we are discussing today, including the Garda Síochána and the Minister, Deputy Shatter, I support the proposal by our Whip, Senator Paul Coghlan, for a full debate on these important issues. It did not happen today or yesterday; the taping was going on since 1990. The machines were renewed in 1990 and newer machines were put in...

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: The Minister, Deputy Shatter, has said he did not know but other people did not know either, so it is unfair to say that he is the first Minister who has handled this situation. That recording was already going on. I listened to Mr. John Redmond, the general secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors, and they did not know.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: I do. I congratulate the Government for bringing forward the Protected Disclosures Bill 2013 to protect whistleblowers. It was initiated in this House but when will the Bill come back to this House? I would like to get an update on that.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: Senator White said she was sad that the previous Government had not introduced an independent Garda authority. Such an authority is being introduced by this Government. Goodness can come out of badness. With the forthcoming statutory inquiry we will see more goodness.

Seanad: Order of Business (26 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: Okay.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Censorship of Publications Board: Chairman Designate (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: Is there a liaison between the new Internet content advisory board and the censorship board?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Censorship of Publications Board: Chairman Designate (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: It was about sex.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Censorship of Publications Board: Chairman Designate (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: Mr. McCarthy is welcome. I do not envy his position because it is onerous. I presume his terms of reference will include wide reading. I note that no book has been banned in Ireland since 2003. If we had another board that did not have anything to do or that had no positive recommendations since 2003, then we might be getting concerned. On the other hand, we can see whether there is a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Censorship of Publications Board: Chairman Designate (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: I do. From what I can see, it is a matter of qualification. It is worth putting on the record for Mr. McCarthy and the board to consider. Let us recall the age of censorship of Edna O'Brien and The Country Girlsand Brendan Behan. As someone said, they would not even raise an eyebrow in "Fair City" now, never mind in a book. Things change with time. Novels and books play a part in...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Canal By-laws and Naomh Éanna: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: That was a question I asked, but did not get an answer.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Canal By-laws and Naomh Éanna: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: While I do not want to be parochial, there is considerable fear in the Hazelhatch and Clondalkin area over the fee going from €126 to €3,500, which is fierce.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Canal By-laws and Naomh Éanna: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: If there is a houseboat there what does it do?

Caít Keane: How much is it currently?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Canal By-laws and Naomh Éanna: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: So the fee is going from €150 to €3,500. Is that correct?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Canal By-laws and Naomh Éanna: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: What happens to the people who for 30 years-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht: Canal By-laws and Naomh Éanna: Discussion (Resumed) (25 Mar 2014)

Caít Keane: I thank Ms Livingstone.
