Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Teacher Recruitment: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I thank the Acting Chairman for allowing me participate in today's meeting. We have had a tremendous exchange between the people who have given evidence, which is rather interesting. There has been great dialogue and clarification with regard to issues. In regard to equal pay, I would say to Ms Joanne Irwin that Senators Lynn Ruane, Maria Byrne and Robbie Gallagher were elected two years...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Teacher Recruitment: Discussion (Resumed) (24 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: Well done on bringing in such a high standard of teachers to the classroom. I have experience of the work of some of the teachers. Initially, there was resentment and pressure from the primary schools and now the most sought-after teachers are those who were trained in Hibernia College because most of them want to be teachers and have a passion to be trained and educated. That is where the...

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I welcome the Minister to the House, particularly when he is in the middle of difficulties in his Department. We will not add to those difficulties today because they are being dealt with in the Dáil. I respect the Minister for coming in today knowing that these issues might be discussed or considered. He has also outlined to the House the current situation regarding the proposed...

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I appreciate that. I am not making any reference whatsoever. I am just pointing out that the media has not picked up the considerable debate we had on 7 February. It might be of assistance in terms of current contributions. At that stage, I was in favour of INM buying Celtic Media. Nobody else was queuing up to buy it at the time and 98 jobs were involved, including at The Anglo Celtand...

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I am just saying that we sent our deliberations to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. That is all I am saying on that particular issue. The reality is that the horse has bolted; the deal is off. It is no longer relevant as far as I am concerned.

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: This is a very current issue and this Seanad must be current.

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: Will you leave me alone for God's sake. The Minister outlined the situation and I am responding to be helpful in this regard. I am not making any accusation about the Minister, who is a constituency colleague of mine in Roscommon.

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I respect the fact that it is a very difficult task and Ministry.

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: I know what it is like being in government and the pressures I was under at particular times. There were issues in my constituency. The other point I want to make, and I do not think the Leas-Chathaoirleach will be able to comment, is that The Irish Timesproposes to acquire Landmark Media Group. That is being considered. I certainly have an interest in this. I am sure the Minister cannot...

Seanad: Public Service Broadcasting and Social Media Regulation: Statements (19 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: The stations are finding it difficult to survive in a competitive environment. The news they generate is being taken by all the other platforms and broadcast around the world. They have to generate the news but they do not get any payment for it, other than from the listeners. I thank the Minister. He has done well.

Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2018)

Terry Leyden: Yesterday, Senator Craughwell referred to the number of personnel leaving the Defence Forces. Both of us are nominated by PDFORRA, the Representative Association of Commissioned Officers, RACO, and the Irish Conference of Professional and Service Associations so we are well aware of what is happening within the Defence Forces. I second the Senator's call for a debate in the House with the...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2018)

Terry Leyden: What about Trinity?

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2018)

Terry Leyden: I request the Leader of the House to keep No. 2, "Statements on Councillors’ Conditions", open-ended, in order that we can come back to it at a further time. There are several Members here who would like to contribute to that. Senator Norris ably represents Trinity College, and his graduates and electorate, and Michael McDowell, who is a senior counsel, represents the graduates of...

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2018)

Terry Leyden: Senator Norris has a good point but there is very little sympathy in the general electorate in respect of our position.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2018)

Terry Leyden: After my attack on the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Ross, over rugby, he instructed me not to darken his door again for a vote. I am very sorry to say that.

Seanad: Order of Business (29 Mar 2018)

Terry Leyden: The Minister, Deputy Ross, reprimanded me for making a statement here about the unfortunate disaster of the Rugby World Cup. It would be in Ireland if the Government was more active. He is very sensitive about it. He told me not to darken his door and that his vote was gone. I am very sorry, because I really needed that vote and he was very good to me in the past. I have to admit that....
