- Consumer Issues: Motion (Resumed) (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: That is if they all turn up. I trust they will arrive at some stage.
- Consumer Issues: Motion (Resumed) (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: I have many points to make. Some of the Minister of State's colleagues decided to insult the people by slagging off the motion. It is wrong to maintain that this motion is a waste of time and is not the basis of a proper debate. Our motion reflects the reality of major problems facing businesses, such as increased Government charges. Petrol, diesel and oil are much dearer in Ireland than...
- Consumer Issues: Motion (Resumed) (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: The Government is not doing it. The Minister of State gave a lovely speech about skills, which I agreed with, but it did not address the motion. Government Members keep on slagging off our motions. The reason we keep putting them down is that we want to get real debates to come up with solutions. The Government fell asleep at the wheel. When it woke up, it took all the wrong actions at...
- Consumer Issues: Motion (Resumed) (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: Has the Minister of State seen the report? If he has, he should bring it into the Chamber.
- Consumer Issues: Motion (Resumed) (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: The Tánaiste claimed preliminary findings show a 5% difference. It cannot possibly be true when wage, property and other costs are taken into account. I accept some retailers in the North of Ireland are able to avail of economies of scale in the UK. That is why we have to drive other economies of scale. We cannot just say there is nothing we can do about it. We have a duty to protect...
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: Question 66: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the communications and discussions she has had to date with the Office of the Revenue Commissioners and with the Department of Finance on behalf of small and medium enterprise specifically in relation to attachment orders issued by the Revenue Commissioners; her views on whether SMEs would benefit from...
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: This is a typical reply. I am not surprised that the Minister of State has missed the whole point of the question. He has done his best not to answer it.
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: I am glad the Minister of State has attempted to answer it. I am shocked that he can tell me this issue was not raised at the meetings. We have business people and also ISME ringing us about this issue. The threat of attachment orders is preventing banks from giving overdrafts to certain businesses. I will explain the reason to the Ministers, if they regard this as complicated.
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: It is not a different question. I am glad to see it only concerns 2,200. The Minister of State, Deputy McGuinness, has been in business and so he will understand the threat of attachment orders. If an attachment order is put on a business, the Revenue can step in and clear out that business account, including any overdraft facility. Therein lies the problem and it is another reason, along...
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: I do not need a lecture from the Minister of State.
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: I accept the explanation and I ask the Minister of State to accept mine as being bona fide. I did not invent it and it is a concern of ISME and of small businesses. Will the Ministers talk to the Minister for Finance and others to see if this is an issue. I agree with the Minister of State that the Revenue Commissioners are normally very reasonable and very easy to deal with when it comes...
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: That is good. Will she please bear it in mind? I want our authorities to cut some slack to businesses that are genuinely trying. I have dealt with two or three already who are under immense pressure. ISME members are obviously feeling the heavy hand and I want the Minister to talk to that organisation. We are talking about the threat of attachment orders that can prevent a bank from...
- Small and Medium Enterprise. (10 Dec 2008)
Damien English: The Minister of State should talk to the banks as well.
