Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: Go raibh maith agat. Cuirim fáilte roimh na finnéithe chuig an gcoiste. Mr. Blažek talked about KBC's role in the tracker mortgage scandal. We heard the KBC Group's CEO basically calling on the Central Bank to "turn the page" on the whole tracker mortgage stuff. Those comments were quite insulting given the fact that KBC was forced to pay €153 million that it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: We know, as part of the scandal, there is a "stop the harm" principle in the Central Bank. KBC adopted a "continue the harm" principle during this process. Despite the intervention of the Central Bank, KBC continued to overcharge customers incorrect rates and continued to repossess homes, despite the fact it was as a result of its own malpractice. Has Mr. Blažek been able to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: Does Mr. Blažek dispute what the Central Bank has found against KBC as part of its €18 million fine? It found that KBC continued the harm despite its intervention and the stop the harm principle was not adhered to by KBC. It continued to overcharge and continued to repossess homes. If KBC accepts those findings, which are part of the €18 million fine, has it identified...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: Moving on to the fact that it is regrettable that KBC is withdrawing from the Irish market, Mr. Blažek is aware that the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, CCPC, has decided to carry out a full phase 2 investigation into the proposed acquisition of certain assets and liabilities of KBC by Bank of Ireland. Can Mr. Blažek outline the acquisition by Bank of Ireland,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: I thank Mr. Blažek for a comprehensive response. My next question is in two parts. One relates to non-performing loans. We know KBC has sold non-performing loans related to 5,000 buy-to-let homes to a vulture, namely, CarVal, to be administered by Pepper Finance. Mr. Blažek will be mindful that the deputy governor, Ed Sibley, said in November 2019 that: The Central Bank does...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: On a point of clarification on that, can CarVal through Pepper Finance increase a variable rate mortgage which used to be with KBC and now is with CarVal by 2%, 3%, 4% or double it? Is there any limit on the level to which it can increase a variable rate mortgage?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: The risk, however, is there. The difference is that high street banks are looking for deposits or more loans so there is a reputational risk but for CarVal there is no such risk if they double the rate. I apologise for taking up the witnesses' time. Will they answer on the Central Bank and what we need to do to attract banks to the market?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach: Withdrawal from Irish Banking Market: Engagement with KBC (1 Dec 2021)

Pearse Doherty: The question was as to how many times Mr. Blažek has met the Governor of the Central Bank in the past year, on this issue.

Consumer Credit (Amendment) Bill 2018: Referral to Select Committee (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: I move: That the Bill be referred to the Select Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, and Taoiseach pursuant to Standing Order 180.

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: Last Tuesday, the Tánaiste said a memorandum would be brought to the Cabinet last week or early this week on the subsidisation of antigen testing. It did not happen on either occasion. Last Wednesday, the Taoiseach said his Government was committed to providing subsidised antigen testing and, yesterday, the Minister for Health said he is ditching plans to subsidise antigen testing...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: The Taoiseach is misleading the Dáil. The SCSI does not have a drop down of €110.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: He is hiding behind the SCSI which does not come up with the costing he has come up with.

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: The devil is always in the detail. These families are going through an absolutely terrible situation. You can never realise it until you are invited into their homes, where they tell you their own story and let you into their own personal scenario. We need to ensure this scheme is fit for purpose. I have asked the Taoiseach a simple question. I have the SCSI calculator and I have just...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: They still have to find the €50,000-----

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (30 Nov 2021)

Pearse Doherty: Gabhaim buíochas leis an Leas-Cheann Comhairle. Ar dtús báire ba mhaith liom tréaslú leo uilig atá ag troid ar son an chirt maidir leis an scannal míoca agus pirít, agus an ceart acu agus fios acu caidé mar atá ceart agus cóir. Níl dabht ar bith go raibh fáilte acu roimh cuid de na ceannlínte a bhí á...
