Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee
Hospital Services: Discussion
(4 Jul 2018)

Colm Burke: I thank the witnesses for their attendance and the presentation. The report provided by Mr. Woods refers to the 2,600 additional beds required and the issue of elective hospitals. Project 2040 contains plans in that regard. What progress has been made on the elective hospitals projects? For instance, Cork was identified as requiring a new hospital. A committee was formed to further the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Business of Joint Committee
Hospital Services: Discussion
(4 Jul 2018)

Colm Burke: The problem we have is that there seems to be an entrenched position. A consultant not working in a particular area - I am talking about a geographical area now - cannot be transferred to another area. That is the advice I am being given. I have written to Gerry O'Dwyer, the CEO, on this matter, and the response I received from Ger Reaney by telephone was that there is no consultant there....

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Jul 2018)

Colm Burke: I wish to raise the issue of psychiatric services for those under 18 years of age on the north side of Cork city. I came across a number of cases in the last few weeks in which people under 18 who require access to a psychiatric consultant have had huge difficulty because that position has been vacant for a number of months. A locum was put in place but the locum has also resigned. As a...

Seanad: Civil Law (Missing Persons) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (28 Jun 2018)

Colm Burke: I thank the Minister and his officials for the work they have done in bringing forward the amendments. I have gone through them in detail and am quite satisfied in an overall context. They have streamlined what was an initial draft. I have highlighted issues that could cause complications at a later stage. There are one or two issues to which I will refer as we go through the amendments....

Seanad: Civil Law (Missing Persons) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (28 Jun 2018)

Seanad: Civil Law (Missing Persons) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (28 Jun 2018)

Colm Burke: I agree with amendment No. 46. It is important because we must be very careful of constitutional issues. The amendment has been very carefully drafted and takes that issue into account and I very much welcome it.

Seanad: Civil Law (Missing Persons) Bill 2016: Report and Final Stages (28 Jun 2018)

Colm Burke: On a technicality, the amendment now becomes section 2. I presume that section 2 of the original Bill will become section 3.
