Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Riachtanas Gaeilge do Stiúrthóirí Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna: Plé (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Ní bhaineann sé leatsa; baineann sé leis an stiúrthóir scoileanna.

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Riachtanas Gaeilge do Stiúrthóirí Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna: Plé (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Ar an gceist sin, tá mé sásta don fhoireann cheannaireachta. Is féidir a fheiceáil nach bhfuil Gaeilge líofa agam. Níor tógadh le Gaeilge mé. Bíonn sé deacair dul ar an raidió le cúrsaí á phlé trí Ghaeilge agus chuile shórt mar sin nuair nach bhfuil an téarmaíocht agat. Tuigim é sin....

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Riachtanas Gaeilge do Stiúrthóirí Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna: Plé (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: An féidir teacht ar ais chuig an gcoiste le líon na mbainisteoirí sinsearacha atá chomh líofa sin?

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Riachtanas Gaeilge do Stiúrthóirí Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna: Plé (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Tá ceist dheireanach agam. As an 70 nó 80 duine atá fostaithe in ardoifig GRETB chun tacú le coláistí dara leibhéal agus pobail Ghaeltachta, cén líon atá líofa go leor sa Ghaeilge chun seirbhís a chur ar fáil do na Gaelscoileanna agus pobail seo trí Ghaeilge? Cén plean atá ag an mbord chun é seo a chur ina...

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Riachtanas Gaeilge do Stiúrthóirí Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna: Plé (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Cén líon de na daoine atá fostaithe san ardoifig ar fad a bhfuil Gaeilge líofa acu? An féidir é sin a chur ar fáil? Ar ndóigh, níl mise ar an gcoiste so beidh mé ag brath ar an gcoiste é a chur ar fáil dúinn ar fad.

Joint Committee on the Irish Language, the Gaeltacht and the Irish Speaking Community: Riachtanas Gaeilge do Stiúrthóirí Boird Oideachais agus Oiliúna: Plé (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Ligfidh mé di teacht isteach ach, mar fhocal scoir dom féin, ar cheist na scéime teanga, tá sé iomlán soiléir sa scéim go raibh agus go bhfuil dualgas dlíthiúil ar an mbord go mbeadh Gaeilge mar chuid riachtanach den phost sin. Níl mé sásta leis an méid atá cloiste agam. Níl muid ag iarraidh a bheith ag tabhairt...

Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (10 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: I am deeply concerned because, once again, families in Galway city are coming to me as they are homeless and unable to access emergency accommodation. One woman came to me with her three young children. They had fled domestic violence but were told they had to wait for emergency accommodation because there were 11 other families waiting before them. She has now been homeless since April....

Residential Tenancies (Amendment) (No. 2) Bill 2024: Second Stage (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: I welcome the fact that the Bill is before the House. It is timely and absolutely necessary. I acknowledge the work done by the students' unions in raising this issue and by so many students impacted by this who have come forward. I am conscious this is the last week before the Dáil goes into recess and I have two concerns as a result. One concern is that this is something we should...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Post-Primary Education: Discussion (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: That is interesting. It is hard enough to correct everybody's homework without also having to think about that. I was interested in AI not yet having the ability to copy one's own speech and how one would write. Obviously, if you are correcting 20 or 30 sets of homework, it will be really hard to think every time about how different students do their homework, and that takes a lot of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Post-Primary Education: Discussion (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Mr. O'Sullivan is dead right on that and it is very interesting, even in respect of the ethics. He mentioned the creativity aspect. If someone is tired and is trying to get something written at the last minute, they are not going to be very creative and will try just to get the job done. They could use AI to get ideas and so on but, at the same time, if they end up being over-reliant on...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Post-Primary Education: Discussion (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: It was stated that AI needs to be seen as a tool for help and assistance, rather than as the primary tool. For school students in particular, how can that balance be struck? Reference was made to education on it. Does that need to start happening even at primary school level to help people understand that it can be used as a tool but that it should not be seen as the only tool?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Post-Primary Education: Discussion (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: I thank the witnesses. The meeting has been really interesting. I also thank the committee for inviting them in, because it has been very interesting for us.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Post-Primary Education: Discussion (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: Gabhaim buíochas leo as ucht teacht os comhair an choiste. I thank everyone for coming before the committee. I congratulate them for all their work. Getting to present it today is a big day and I am delighted to see everyone was able to bring family members and so on. Anyone who has ever done a project or run for an election knows it takes a family effort, even if it is just putting...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: The Future of Artificial Intelligence in Post-Primary Education: Discussion (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: That is interesting. It is therefore about trying to strike a balance about how good someone's AI generated work is. Was it different from French, for example, or was French the same?

Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Ukraine War (9 Jul 2024)

Mairéad Farrell: 83. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade the total amount of foreign aid that has been provided to date to Ukraine, disaggregated by the receiving institution, the specific purpose it was to be used for, and whether there are any checks or audits to determine whether it was used for the purposes for which it was provided, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the...
