Job Creation and Economic Growth: Motion [Private Members] (12 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: The Minister of State, Deputy John Perry, has expressed his frustration at the motion and I feel the same way. I was watching the debate on the monitor before coming to the House and could only wonder what was the purpose of the Sinn Féin motion, apart from kicking the Government in an opportunistic way, as Opposition parties do. I can see no other reason for it. With no disrespect to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: We have all listened intently to the delegation and realise the extent of the issues. Town centres are struggling to survive. The solutions outlined go some way to solving the problem but we need to do more. I thank the witnesses for attending and look forward to working with them in the future.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: Would Ms Buckley say that there should be a differential rate which would mean those out of town should pay more than those within the town? If we were to do so, it would match the planning guidelines.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: Deputy Calleary made a point earlier. In fairness, as it is, the out-of-town retailers have paid a development contribution on their parking spaces. That does not mean we cannot challenge imposing such a levy, if that is the route Ms Buckley is suggesting, but one should bear in mind that they have paid a development contribution on those spaces. To be as impartial as possible, it would be...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: On the possibility of a progressive rate-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: I might come in on that issue rather than lose momentum because my question relates to what Deputy Peadar Tóibín said about progressive rates. The RGDATA document focused on parking being not necessarily the panacea to the issues retailers face in towns as opposed to out-of-town places such as the Dunnes, Tescos, Lidls and so forth. Has RGDATA done any costing or analysis on what...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Retail Sector Report: Discussion with RGDATA (12 Mar 2013)

Autism Bill 2012: Second Stage [Private Members] (8 Mar 2013)

John Lyons: First, on behalf of my Labour Party colleagues, I compliment Deputy McCarthy on bringing forward this Bill. Second, without blowing his own trumpet, the Minister brought a sense of real-life experience to this debate.
